Consider a modded xbox:

-Plays bin, quicktime, realmedia, etc.. and is extremely upgradeable to play newer formats.

-With the hdd upgrade you could store hundreds of movies on it and select them from a menu without getting up or disk swapping.

-Is capable of being a spare or backup computer.

-M$ doesn't make profit on the sale of xbox's themselves, so you're getting an excellent price.

-It's easier to repair an xbox since spare parts are very common.

-You can ftp movies to the xbox and save the hassle and cost of burning disks.

-It's very convenient that you can switch between movies, games, music, pictures, etc without having to leave your seat.

Gave up on them. Moved on to the Cyberhome.

Besides APEX has this to deal with.

Burn as normal data, then browse for the file via the DVD Player.

Also you can burn as a data disk ANY mpeg file you have and it will play it... So instead of wasting 4 CD-R's for movies like the Aviator you can just extract the mpeg file and burn as data on a DVD, with room for 2 more movies... Also it helps when you collect TV shows and you dont want to have to convert every avi/mpg file into DVD or (s)vcd just too watch it on your TV...

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

New 1109 firmware. Amazon has the highly sought after Philips DVP642
DVD/CD/MP3/Divx Player at $65

This is currently the hacker's favorite DVD player. Plays those
downloaded movies. DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD,
MP3-CD, MPEG-4, Picture-CD and DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x, AVI. 4x video
upsampling enhances all outputs.

Also plays JPEG, mpg, Xvid, PAL DVDs, PAL Divx, KVCD, SRT. It also has
Progressive scan and 4x upsampling. You can just dump these files on a
DVD and it will start playing them. No need to specially format the
disk.

i gave up on Apex, they were cool when you didn't know better. But it's like buying stuff at the 99 cent store, sure it works fine a couple times but it quickly falls apart because it was crap to begin with.

I also went the Phillips 842 route, but it only played *some* divx, xvid, mpg4 files.

The DVD player i have (and absolutely love), I purchased because of it's karaoke and wireless kareoke mics.

http://andrewboss.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=SP3020

It not only plays everything on any media, we can use it as a karaoke machine!

It even plays stuff that skips and pops on my computers.

"COMPATIBLE WITH DivX® version 3.11, 4.xx, 5.xx, DivX PRO, XviD, .avi, MPEG-4, QPEL support."

This is key. Other dvd players say they play .avi (divx) and will if andf only if the .avi is encoded within a very narrow spec. not so with the Andrew Boss. It is made from the ground up to play everything.

The only files i couldn't get it to play are some exotically encoded .mov files.

Smile Great DVD Player

I picked up IODATA's Avel Linkplayer2. It's a network player which can play your regular DVD's or anything else you load on there like XVID, DIVX, mpeg2 etc... The coolest part is that it will also play all the file formats from either across your network or from an external source like a hard drive hooked up via the USB port on the front. It cost me $250, but it plays things my modded XBOX wouldn't.

The DVP642 is an awesome dvd player! The only grudge I hvae is that it plays the divx/xvid movies on my tv at 4x3 ratio, instead of a 16x9. I'm hoping that phillips will release an upgrade to fix the ar on divx format movies.

erm, try http:/www.xboxscene.com for help with that. otherwise get a bloody long ethernet cable. Ftp'ing films to your xbox is dashboard dependant.
