Mimzy

I had something like that a few months ago. Turned out the IDE drivers were corrupt, severely limiting speed of transfer from one file to another.

I would like to say it's an AMD 2300. But I am totally unsure.

Install a Linux partition. I've never seen "unrar" take that long.

But the PC specs are not the issue.

I have 3 P4's 1.7's.... none ever take that long.

Admin?

- Free up disk space
- Defrag the hard disk(s)
- Pause your Torrent client if you're running one
- Extract from one physical drive to another if you can

I'll move this to the Computer Help forum

I like to move it move it

i have the same problem with a an External Seagate Freeagent (320gb) drive i got as few months ago. Downloaded a dvdrip last week via grabit straight to it and the unrar took something stupid like an hour and a half?!? Wtf?

i'm putting it down to my pc being old and shitty and not even running usb2 (i would expect data transfers not to be that quick but wouldnt have thought unrarring stuff would too). Would the unrar be quicker if winrar was on the same drive?

all great suggestions, but the last one only helps if its on a different IDE chain. if they're master/slave on the same cable, it won't make a lot of difference.

the best set up (using purely IDE) is to have an HDD as master on each cable and a DVD-RW as slave. copying between drives is quicker, and burning on the opposite drive is quicker.

lol

munson makes a good point here. installing xp again would clear up any issues you already have, then you can try again without wondering if it's your OS.

If there is more than one hard drive, check the boot sequence in BIOS. I've known a PC to try and boot from a data drive and when that failed continue to boot from a system drive but with disastrous consequences.

If you are using Winrar ,always right click the rar file and click Extract here ,do not drag and drop the file into a desired folder from an archive ,it copies the file first to a temporary directory, and only then to desired destination. But if you click Extract Here ,it extracts the file directly within the folder ,with no moving about ,saving a ton of time.
