Metallica - New Album

Something for the Metallica fans still out there....

Mission Metallica is an official site bringing you snippets from the new album, behind the scene glimpses from the recording studio, various other random videos, old photos, live concert recordings etc. all for free.

I've got platinum access to the site however I'm not sure what extra that gives me over standard access but I've taken a snippet from the main trailer for the site which reveals some riffs from a few of the new songs they've recorded (I don't know whether they'll end up on the album though).

It's certainly going to be better than St. Anger from the sounds of it but they're putting a lot of pressure on themselves by building up the hype and saying they're going back to their old school style (they've gone back to standard tuning, the snare drum has been tightened back up and the solos are back at least).

I'll just sit back and wait for the "Metallica have sucked since 198x" comments.

It's love baby!

You mean "Shit" Anger. Worse fucking album ever. I hope to god this one is their redemption.

After the Black Album things went downhill though Load and Reload have a few great tracks.

Guitar work is still on point, Metallica in general just hasn't done it for me for a long time, lyrically they used to kill and now it's like 'meh' (least for me). Kind of glad they're still doing their thing I guess. :|

mod? no! asshole? yes!

I just don't believe them anymore. St. Anger sounded like the band recorded their tracks, then james recorded vocals on his yacht, sipping martinis and still trying to sound rough.

When I want metal, I'll stick to Dethklok.

Four negative replies but only two downloads of the sample.

I like a LOT of variety in my music and listen to all kinds of shit from DnB, metal, rock, dance, acid, punk, blues, classical etc. so I can somewhat appreciate the various changes in direction they've taken and still enjoy it (well, a fair portion of it anyways). I agree that their recent albums have been somewhat lacking but I'm quietly confident that they'll put something out that will blow the previous few albums out of the water (even if that isn't exactly setting the bar that high).

I can handle any Metallica album but St. Anger. Which imo was atrocious.

Agreed, I saw them in concert a total of 5 times (Kill Em All, Ride, Justice, Black and Load) and I'm looking forward to this album, but I'm sorry St. Anger was total shit. Maybe two "decent" tracks, but it wasn't the same Metallica I grew up on..

See Looter I typically agree on your musical tastes but people that say they only like/listen to Cliff' Metallica just drive me nuts -- he was good and all, but he wasn't anything nut busting worthy, that's like listening to only Syd Barret Pink Floyd, sure it was a period of the band but it moved on to better things after the fact ;x (granted, they all went downhill further down the road as well but that's just picking it apart )

The One, The Only

Nice to see RIck Ruben producing. He'll kick their whiny sellout asses and make another album that sounds more like Master of Puppets and less like the drivel that they have put out the last 18 years.

Free... Like Nelson Mandela!

I listened to the clip. They're still in the same toilet since 1991.
Lars is a HUGE fag and should quit pretending to drum since he is too old to kick. He should start a bon jovi cover band.

The rest need to get back on hard drugs and alcohol. It's their only hope.

but now i guess i my musical tastes progressed past em....once i hear hetfields (polished) voice i lose interest....i still love the first 2(no not 3)

One of my mates hosts a huge bbq once a year and many of us can play guitar so there's usually half a dozen acoustics lying around the garden and a few electrics indoors so we inevitably end up jamming.

Knowing many of their dislikes for "new" Metallica (i.e. post Black album), I used to whip out a verse and a chorus from some of the lesser known Load/Reload songs and they responded excellently asking me what band/songs they were from so they could listen to the studio recordings. When I said which band and which album(s), they did a complete U-turn and said "pah, I don't listen to those albums - they're shit".

I don't mind what people's views are of Metallica. I enjoy most of their work, they still kick ass live and I enjoy jamming along to their music with my guitars (it's one of my biggest stress relievers - second to wanking) although admittedly I do tend to jam along to the older work mainly.

I was never a big fan of load/reload when they came out, I think I was listening to newer bands around the time (Machine Head, Snot, One Minute Silence, SoaD) but I can listen to those albums now and enjoy them for what they are, rock albums but not thrash like their early stuff.

That snippet sounds promising but it's hard to judge what the new album will sound like, they should release a single before Reading/Leeds then play the song live. I remember way back at Donington '95 they played '2x4' and it didn't go down too well as no one had heard it before, I also remember James having a really bad mullet that day.

What I'm hoping for from the new album is some hi-tempo songs that don't go into a halftime feel once the intro finishes and a few long-ass solos with a decent structure, which Kirk was known for, solos like 'Creeping Death' & 'Shortest Straw'. I hope he cuts back a bit on the wah as well, I like wah solo's but he over used it on the black album. Saying that, any kind of solo will be nice compared to the absense of them on St. Anger.

I'm happy Rick Rubin is producing the album, he's worked on some of my favourite heavy/thrash albums so I'm pretty confident he'll get a good sound out of them, but it's up to band to deliver some good tunes as well.

Finally.. someone who can relate to what I've been saying. Don't think of Load/Reload as the "Metallica" that you've listened to in the late 80s... just think of it as another band. The end result, for a lot of people, is a pretty good album. Admittedly there are quite a few weak songs but, overall, it's still worth a few listens. This is exactly what happened at the BBQs I mentioned... people slag off later albums... I play a few riffs of later albums which get a good reception but when they find out the riffs are from those albums, they do a U-turn and slag them off!!!!
