Also considered the 701s, but it seems they are better for classical as opposed to metal music, and requires an amp. They do have killer looks though.
From what I've read the Beyers 880 and the 990's have the same driver but the bass is a lot better with the 990's and therefor better with Rock/metal. Did you by chance just buy the Beyers 990 off of amazon? I saw em new for $200 last night and there no longer there, lol.
I stayed away from the Grado's because they color the sound, and I wasn't looking for that at all, and I hear there not that comfortable. I was looking for a reference headphone.
I'm listening to Pink Floyd with the AKG's and they sound amazing, literally amazing. I've tried Metallica which sounds pretty damn good, In Flames sounded Great as well as with Within Temptation.
Where these headphones do shine is with Pink Floyd, Diana Krall, BB King, and classical and a lot of celtic music.
I'm pleased with these for Rock/Metal as they do sound great.
I'm NOT using a headphone amp, and they require a bit of a boost I'll say which my speakers have some amplification which is what I'm plugging into.
On my mp3 player these headphones sound decent, but not great by any means.
The comfort level isn't nearly as high as I would like, but there brand new and will take some time to break in.
I just started burning these headphones in, I've read on numerous sites and many reviewers that these headphones require 300+ hours of burn in time.
