You could just have said "I Love Miike"

I've heard great things about Buffalo Boy, but haven't got round to seeing it yet. And Yakuza Demon isn't one that I'd noticed (though I've seen most Miike films).

Have you seen 'The Bird People in China'? Definitely my fav Miike. And Zebraman is worth a watch too.

As you have a couple of Park's in there you have to see JSA - it's excellent and features another brilliant performance from Song Kang-ho (without a doubt the best actor on screen in the world!).

I'd add 3-iron for the Ki-duk's. I couldn't tell you what the movie means...but it's a great journey before leaving you confused

And for Takeshi you MUST see Getting Any. It really isn't what I was expecting...but it's the funniest slapstick since Peter Sellars did Clouseau. (The last 20mins are fucking awful, Takeshi must've been tripping when he wrote it, but the hour-and-a-bit before is brilliant! One of my two fav slapstick Asian comedies, the other being Chow's 'King of Comedy' which hurts to watch in some scenes cos you can't catch your breath for laughing.)

Only others I'd add that you may like (based upon the Yakuza tendencies) is Fukasaku's 'Yakuza Papers'. Best thing about the 5 movies is (IMO) the last 2 are better than the already gripping first 2 (and the 3rd one aint bad either).

"H"(2002) Korean movie directed by Jong-hyuk Lee..Not well known but if you like a movie that you have to "Work it out" youll love this Korean treat.

Seen tons of shit lately ('shit' as in stuff, not all bad):

- The Warlords: Any Lau, Jet Li, and Takeshi Kineshiro in a big budget multi extra epic. Lovely to look at, but too thick with the Shakespearean tragedy attempt.

- Valley of Flowers: Pan Nalin's first movie since Samsara and has a lot of the feel of that movie, surreal and beautiful. DO NOT GET AN AVI. This must be watched on DVD or better quality, as much for the sound - actually, more for the sound - than the visuals. Every note and every image is choreographed. Beautiful movie...but, again, I felt shortchanged with the ending. Still, for the absolutely gorgeous lead actress and everything that comes before Japan it's well worth it! (Ending isn't terrible, it just isn't awesome either.)

- Swordsmen in Double Flag Town (1991): martial arts spaghetti western! Another beautiful movie set in the wasteland/deserts of northern China. Very little fighting and lots of character build-up. Not a chop-fooey flick, but a great watch with an excellent end.

- Courthouse on Horseback: an amazing film about a judge, a trainee judge, and a (court) recorder who travel the remote villages in China officiating over village disputes. I learnt more about rural China watching this movie than in the 100's of hours of I've spent watching movies and documentaries and reading about the fastest growing economy on earth. It won't be to everyone's taste, but is one of the most rewarding movies I've seen in years.

- Vengeance is Mine: finally got to watching Shoei Imamura's "tour de force"...and that's exactly what it is! Mindblowingly good...but I watched a cut version (afaik, difficult to assess with PAL runtimes), hoping to get hold of a certified uncut version so I can be sure.


Lots of others watched, mostly my oldkool Shaw Bros chop-fooey flicks - I love em! But not really the swordplay ones, they don't do it for me, has to be hand-to-hand kung fu for me.

Just about to watch 'Lust, Caution'

EDIT: didn't watch Lust, Caution, turns out there's an 'uncut' version...not sure if the version I have is cut, but why take the risk, eh?

I have to recommend a new thai action movie called "Chocolate". There's a couple of copies floating around that aren't too bad and definitely worth the dl. The trailer can be seen on youtube and it's directed by The same guy who did Ong Bak. Tony Jaa was supposed to star but the role was given to a female known as Jeeja when problems between Jaa and the director couldn't be resolved.

Shit film, but the action is fucking awesome. That fight scene just past the hour mark in the scene that looks just like Kill Bill, the kicks are legendary!

Choclate is FANTASTIC. Loved the female lead and want to see her in more movies. The custom subs were unintelligable but you could glean enough from them to follow the (limited) plot. The fights are some of the best I've ever seen and scenes that I thought were clever CGI turned out to be STUNTS when I saw the out-takes... Fucking insane!
