I'm sad to say that I'm not all "OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG THAT WAS AWESOME OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG" like I expected to be. It feels like the movie had a much different feel to it, one that wasn't specifically a good feel.

First off, it turned into a bit of a comedy at some point. Gimli was constantly cracking jokes or being put in funny situations, and while they were certainly funny, some hilarious, they detracted from making this movie so much of an epic.
I really didn't like how the orcs suddenly developed language skills and started to act more like beings. I liked them better as mindless killing machines sweeping across the land destroying all that is good.
Somehow, the Battle of Helm's Deep, while being the most fuggin' awesome thing of the year, didn't draw me in as much as I would like. I would've prefered more zoomed out shots that tried to take my breath away rather than a bunch of up close shots of things I could barely decipher. The action, however, was great. When they got into it and started fighting, and would show Aragorn/Gimli/Legolas start to wail on the bad guys, I was very impressed.
There were a bunch of little oddities that didn't make sense, like "WTF, why didn't they just do that in the first place?" One I noted was that Frodo at one point wanted to sneak in behind a small detachment that was going back into Valador while the gate was still open. I found it kinda retarded that he considered it so seriously. There were only about 50 orcs scanning for people and he would've been walking in the middle of a plain flat rocky field, dunno how he planned to just float by all those wandering eyes.
But eh, enough bashing of an otherwise spectacular movie. Go see it now. I'm also submitting plans to local VCD groups to put subliminal programming in their CAMs and TSs to tell all the people useless enough to actually watch that kind of copy to kill themselves. :P

My review puts it at a 9.9/10

I to had a problem with the sudden development of 'proper english accents' among the orcs... I thought the ents looked a little weird but over all were great considering I consider the ents to be almost un filmable and that was a great attempt! I thought all that added stuff with Faramir was just un-needed. I also noticed that every single big character in the movie was resolved to the opposite of what we (the audience) want and then suddenly at the last minute changed their minds (i.e. Treebeard, Theoden, Faramir etc.). Over all it was a great movie and to me seems at least the equal to Fellowship.

Man, I don't see how you can bash the CG used on Golum. It was pretty damn incredible from my point of view. After seeing him for just a few seconds I knew why everyone was so impressed by it. He mixed in with the rest of the movie EXTREMELY well. It's not perfect yet, no CG really is, but it's damn amazing. I love how with simple facial expressions and a voice change they were able to make him alternate between good/evil/good/evil back and forth effectively. His dual personalities almost look like different models all together. Anyways, he rocks.

I've seen the movie yesterday. After seeing fotr i read the 3 books, so that changed my view completely on entering the theatre. Offcourse i had created my own views on things, eg. the Ents we're one of my favourite parts of the book. The friendship that grows between Legolas and Gimli were also a part i thought would be great in the movie.
So alot of expections when the movie started. The beginning was great, with Gandalf fighting the Balrog. The riders of Rohan we're also one of my favourite things in the book, and the movie didn't dissapointed me. They looked exactly like i imagined them (gj peter).
I won't go deep into the things i liked about the movie, because they are too many. So i will explain the things i didn't like.
The jokes from Gimli's side were sometimes funny, but sometimes misplaced. The people that didn't read the book will appreciate them i guess. The Ents were, well, in my opinion dissapointing. The split in the book where a part goes to the battle and in the morning suddenly a forest stands behind the orcs is left out. And the attack on Isengard i imagined seeing the forest get to life slowly, moving like a thunderstorm towards Isengard. The few skinny Ents that walk out of the forest in the movie are in my opinion dissapointing.
Gollum is GREAT, no question about it. No remarks on him.
The fake death of Aragorn could have been left out imho. We've allready seen Gandalf, Merry and Pippin return. And the sequence where he rides on his horse, more death then alive back to Helm's Deep is crap.
And there are a few other things, (eg. Elrond/Galadriel telepathy, elves helping in battle, faramir turning evil, history of ents being left out, no emotional impressing introduction of aragorn as future king and more) but i can explain them best with the following explenation: In the fotr things being changed or left out were understandable. I would do the same if i was the director. But in TTT there are too many things which i would have done different, and are not really understandable. (only applies when you've read the book(s). People that haven't read them will have a great time and won't notice it)

lotr: TTT -> 9/10

i think most of the general criticisms come down to three points :

1. peter jackson is a low budget horror director. hell, near the opening scene where theres about 20 orcs coming thru the hills, could've been right out of Bad Taste!

2. the movie is long enough as it is. if they'd included the points of the books that people would like to be included, they would've had to remove other sections to keep it under about 5 hours long!

3. simply, you can't please everyone. remember, theres always going to be a percentage of people who are there to see a movie, and a percentage of people who are going to see a movie adaptation of a book. the different groups want different things. personally, i've chosen to read the books afterwards as then i can't be disappointed!

after seeing fotr about a thousand times i waited in anticipation of ttt.

pj has blown me away with his visualisation of middle earth. all the people and locations in the film are stunning.

the book was however butchered for this film.

the ents seem like jay & silent bob go wizard whacking compared to the deep and sad creatures you will find in the book.

faramir was the good guy now he's boromirs bastard lovechild.

the elves didn't get involved in this war. the lotr is about the dawn of men. it is not the dawn of men with a few hundred elven archers at helms deep.

however i am a complete tolkein fanatic and read both the lotr and the silmarillion every year and this film still surpassed anything i think i will see until the next one..


matrix2+3 don't count as they are sure to be pure art.

All right, well I finally saw the movie this morning, and so here are my comments:

Overall the movie just blew me away. All the graphics absolutely amazing. Star Wars looked like Pixar movie compared to this. I liked how you could actually see the blood vessel reflections in gollums eyes.

Some of you guys felt that it had a slow beginning. I too felt this at the beginning. (It sped up for me when Legolas jumped on the horse with Gimli when they were attacking the wolves). When this is actually going to be seen like PJ invisioned (1 9 hour block), I don't think that we will notice it at all.

Another thing you guys disliked was that the orcs could actually speak.....Hmmm, PJ didn't make this up, they could speak all along in the book.

Gimli's jokes - True, Gimli did seem like he was never serious, but he was always made to seem that way in the book. I don't know if you guys were upset about the way he acted during the battle for Helm's deep, but that was almost exactly how it was written in the book (Legolas in Gimli having a contest).

The Ents - How can you guys not like them? They ruled big time!
Oh, and there were not just a few skinny ents coming out of the forest to destroy Isengard. If I remember right, I never saw an end.

All right, there were a few things that I didn't quite like.

First, what the men soldiers for Mordor looked like. I was having major flashbacks of Ninja Gaiden.

Aragorn dying. Didn't quite see the point of it, but I can deal with it.

Faramir's whole role. He completly went on some side story to Osgiligath that made no sense to me. It was cool and everything, but I didn't see what PJ was getting at. Maybe it will fit better with the 3rd one. Oh, that gets me to another point. I think PJ did a great thing by leaving the two ending sequences(Shelob and Gandalf talking to Sauraman) for ROTK. ROTK is obviously smaller, and he was able to fit much more material in this way. Seriously, this movie could of been 9 hours by itself easily.

Oh, I was also dissapointed that I didn't hear the Requim for a dream music in there. That just sounded so cool in the trailer

Besides that, everything rocked.

Overall: 9.5/10
FOTR: 10/10

I think that if it's one thing we learned, if the movie industry wants to make money(edit: a lot more money), they need to a make a movie that will get people to actually pay for a ticket, and buy the DVD. Which is why I suggest if not for this one, then the next one, we should all go to the theatres several times, and give it the box-office record.(Titanic....Seriously, why is it at the top?)

Well I went to go see the movie tuesday night at 11:59 for the premiere.. they had a lot of cool prize give aways, a years pass to UA theatres and a dude actually won a 500$ replica ring.. but I wasnt all that impressed with the movie itself. It seemed to me that they had to rely on CGI and humour( mainly manifested in Gimlie's character) to relate the story line, so i came away with the feeling that the movie could have been much better like the original. But everyone else i talked to thought the movie was really good, so i went back to see it again tonight.. and even after a quarter liter of voodka it wasnt as good as it should have been.. so I stand by my original opinoin that allthough the movie was OK, but it could have been much better had they stuck to the book.

The thing that I didn't really like about Gimli's jokes and the orcs speaking was that it happened so suddenly in the second movie. In the first the orcs were mindless killing machines, and I thought, "Okay, the orcs are mindless killing machines." Now out of nowhere they seem to have individual personalities and emotions beyond the the basic instinct to kill everything. The same with Gimli's jokes, I laughed in the first one because of Gimli's need for battle. Like when they're about to get in the cave troll scene and everyone is kinda worried and preparing to fight and Gimli is just standing there with his axes drawn saying, "Let them come." I was entertained by his need to kick ass. The part of the contest that was in the book was actually funny without detracting from the seriousness of the film. I could've seen Gimli from FOTR doing exactly that. It's just all of the other jokes that involved him that didn't really appeal to me.

So the orcs speaking isn't bad. Gimli's jokes aren't bad. It's just the instant change from one movie to the next that kinda rains on my parade of continuity.

it was pretty close to the book, except for a FEW things, but i still thought the movie was INSANE. whats the BIG deal with orcs speaking? they could speak in the book, so why not in the movie?
someone said something about the movie relying on CGi, well what do u think, how else are u supposed to film 10,000+ soldiers? how else are u gonna bring the ents to life? im a huge fan of star wars and i know that LOTR and STAR WARS are completely different, but imo the LOTR movies completely destroyed EP1 and EP2 in every aspect.

dunno why everyone is bashing on the ENTS and CGI. I thought the ENTS were tight, though there were a few scenes where the picture of the dudes riding on the big trees back looked bad... aka it was poorly done.

and i found gollums CGIness almost flawless. it's much better than if a person were to try to reinact (sp?) him.

I saw it yesterday on theather... I never been lotr-fan, and I watched Fellowship of the Ring -DVD a week ago, and excpected the same from TTT... I was a bit disappointed...
the Gollum was beautiful work. 10/10 of it.
but why all the humor??? IMO, this kind of sarcastic humor doesn't belong to this kind of movie.

and the scene where legolas skiis down with medal plate like a snowboard... usch.. =/ They should leave that to JamesBond films and do serious stuff for this movie...

Well, the 3rd part is going to be either DVDSCR or DVD for me, not to theatre.
