Tim Burton likes his CHOCOLATE FACTORY

According to a report published today in Variety, director Tim Burton is very close to coming aboard to direct a new version of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY for Warner Bros. The article states that top WB execs are positive for fitting Burton in as the show's director. The same apparently is true of Roald Dahl's estate, CHARLIE's author.

Warners will toss out the earlier drafts and let Burton start from scratch and from his own vision. Rather interesting is the inclusion of husband/wife acting duo Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston who, along with Brad Grey, will be producing through their film production company named Plan B.

Burton is finishing work on his next film, a comedy titled BIG FISH.

A sequel to DUNGEONS & DRAGONS?

I didn't think this would ever happen, but a sequel is being planned for the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS movie that came out three years ago. MATRIX producer Joel Silver will be overseeing the project via his Zinc Entertainment company along with Sweetpea Entertainment and Marching Band Productions. Sweetpea originally negotiated the film rights from TSR years back, then went on to make the live-action film that starred Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans, Thora Birch and Jeremy Irons.

No talent is mentioned as being attached, and it's unclear whether the first film's director, Courtney Solomon, will be back behind the camera, but the companies are targeting an early '04 release date. But the big question I have is: will the film follow the third edition D&D rules or stick with the second edition? That's a huge decision for Joel Silver to make!

Fillion Says FIREFLY Might Get a Movie

I think this needs to go under the "Why the fuck would they bother" file

Nathan Fillion, star of the canceled Fox series FIREFLY, says that the show might get a movie adaption.

Sci Fi Wire had the word:

Nathan Fillion, star of Fox's defunct SF western series Firefly, told SCI FI Wire that the show could rise again, both as a movie and as a DVD set. "Right now, our hopes and dreams are pinned on a Firefly movie, which TV can't cancel us out of," Fillion said in an interview at the May 18 Saturn Awards, where he was honored with Cinescape's Face of the Future Award. "We're talking silver screen, wide release, big old deal. So everything's looking very positive, so we're going to keep our fingers crossed."

Series creator Joss Whedon would write and direct the movie, Fillion added.

Meanwhile, Fillion-who played Capt. Mal Reynolds-said that he is completing audio commentaries for a complete DVD set of the Fox series' 15 produced episodes, including three that never aired. "I just finished commentary with Alan Tudyk [Wash] on 'War Stories,' an episode where he and I got tortured. ... And then, Monday, I go in to do audio commentary with Joss Whedon for 'Serenity,' the two-hour pilot."

The DVD will also include on-camera interviews and maybe even some of Fillion's own behind-the-scenes home video and photos. As for the unaired episodes, Fillion said, "My naked ass is in them. In the very last episode. I'll let you know that much. They called me Capt. Tight Pants for some time. And now it's going to be Capt. No Pants for sure." Fillion did not know when the DVD set would come out.

Hey Petrocs. Have you heard any other word on Rocky VI? I heard it was going to start shooting this summer and release in summer of 2004. Just wondering if it's still a go. I for one am curious to know what Rocky Balboa has been doing for the last 13 years and I think others would be to. Stallone is supposed to write , direct and produce(may not be a good thing but did a great job in the original Rocky as director). The movie will be about story more than it is spectacle. I just hope it gets done and is a direct turnaround from Rocky V.

Sherlock Holmes: The Next Generation

An untitled Sherlock Holmes movie script (with a twist) has been sold to New Line Cinema. Written by Mark DiStefano, the story has a green New York City detective finding out he's the great-great-grandson of the master detective. As the officer solves case after case, the media pick up and play on what appears to be the Holmes' family skill of deduction and scientific reason. With his prestige and celebrity status growing, the detective suddenly is issued a challenged by an unknown criminal who copycats the crimes Sherlock Holmes faced in his literary adventures. In short, it's Sherlock Holmes set in the modern day and if he were a NYC cop.

The script was sold to New Line through Benderspink, a management/production company who a week ago made our headlines with the announcement of a Y: THE LAST MAN movie. DiStefano is making somewhere in the neighborhood of $500K from the sale of his script.

(I dunno about this one..sounds B-movieish and just plain stupid)

I havent heard anything since Stallone approached MGM about making a sequal and nothing came from the meetings. Personally Rocky VI would be an insult to fans. Rocky would be approaching 60 and wouldnt be fighting anymore. The only thing they could do is have Rocky being a trainer and that would ruin the image everyone has of the triumphant Rocky (not that Rocky IV, V and VI didnt do that already). If..IF this gets done I would venture the guess that it would be marginally successful just for nostalgia sake but it would be very hard to pick up new fans.

Sly said he would be true to his age but Rocky would be only 50. And Rocky would probably lose in the ring. I don't think they could just bring Ivan Drago back too and they duke it out again. If the movie is based more on story and has heart. I think it will work. I don't think it could just be spectacle.

I beleive a Rambo IV is more beleivable than a Rocky VI if there is a good written script. We could see a more covert type John Rambo more in the essence of the first Rambo(the best of the series).
I watched Rocky V again last night. And I do agree it wasn't a very good movie but it did had it's moments where it was pretty descent. Such as the flashback scene and the end where Mickey tells Rocky to go one more round. The main reason I want a Rocky VI is to right the wrong of the last movie. I really felt empty leaving the theather on that one. While I actually felt good after watching the other three Rockys(did not see the original in theater, I'm not that old).

OLD SCHOOL trio gets sophomore year

Today's Variety ran a story about DreamWorks Pictures continuing its partnership with Ivan Reitman's production company, Montecito Picture Company, for another three years. One of the movies that Montecito has in active development is a sequel to OLD SCHOOL, the comedy that starred Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn and Luke Wilson as a trio of mid-30s guys who decide to start up their own college fraternity. No contracts with the stars have been signed yet but Montecity expects that all three gentlemen will be back to work on the sequel.

DreamWorks is also preparing to release OLD SCHOOL on DVD/VHS on June 10 in both rated and unrated versions. The unrated version of the movie includes new footage that's, you guessed it, unrated and thus more adult, as well as blooper reel and different menu designs than the ones found in the rated DVD release.

Should Ewan STAY or should he go?

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor (DOWN WITH LOVE) is in talks to take the lead in STAY, the much talked about thriller in development at New Regency Pictures. Written by David Benioff (THE 25TH HOUR), McGregor's character is a professor at a Ivy League college whose life becomes surreal after he tries to prevent one of his students from committing suicide.

Now this one sounds promising

Travolta warming up to BE COOL?

Give us Chili Palmer!

According to Variety, John Travolta is now serious about reprising his role of Chili Palmer from GET SHORTY in a sequel titled BE COOL. The novel was written by Elmore Leonard and the script was penned by Peter Steinfeld. Rumors of Travolta being interested in playing Chili again have swirled around ever since Barry Sonnenfeld's original film came out back in 1995.

MGM, the studio that owns the rights, also has the ear of director Brett Ratner (RED DRAGON). Ratner is thinking about coming onboard to helm the feature if he can maneouver around his contract with New Line Cinema, to whom he owes his next film. Whether or not Ratner is behind the camera on the BE COOL set ultimately depends if the two studios can reach a compromise.

Neato. I just watched "Get Shorty" a second time a few weeks back, and I must say it is a very well-executed film. The timing is just so great in all the scenes -- I'd love to see another movie like that.

Minor Characters in THE PUNISHER

FilmJerk had the details:

Among the roles actors are being sought after:
Nicky Duka: Described as “A slick, greasy kind of guy” with a good sense of humor in his thirties. His relationships to the other characters in the film is not explained here.

Detective Jimmy Weeks: An African-American character between the ages of 35 and 45, Det. Weeks was formerly in the Special Forces. Now a detective, he’s trying to capture The Punisher.

Leonard Glass: In his 40s, he is the sidekick to villain Howard Saint (Travolta). In the casting notes, he is described as “good looking and conservative.”

Stanley Bumpo: An extremely overweight character, the producers are looking for an actor 275 pounds and up. He is a happy-go-lucky guy, described as very lovable. In the comics, he is introduced in the series’ third volume as Frank’s neighbor, and helps to save his life. Most will remember this character best when a crane has to lift him out of his apartment when he has a heart attack.

John Saint: At 18 to 22 years old, he plays the son of John Travolta’s character and is illustrated as being a “dark-haired pretty boy with a very well toned body.” It is his death that sets in motion his father’s crusade that puts him up against Castle.

Mike Toro: A cutthroat Cuban gangster in his mid-thirties.

SMG and Mrs. Lachey Up For Some Heroin'

I found this interesting....

MSN had the rumors:

OK, confession time ... while I never went to a comic convention and I don't consider myself to be a total geek, there are a few superheroes that I'm a major freak over. Back in prehistoric days when TVs didn't have remote controls, the Bionic Woman (played by Lindsay Wagner) was a cool female crime fighter, but my favorite had to be Wonder Woman, played by the mah-velous Lynda Carter.

What recently threw me for a loop was finding out how many actresses are vying to play the lead when they take Wonder Woman to the big screen. Of course, the above-mentioned Jennifer Lopez is a possible contender for filling her red thigh-high boots, as is America's sweetheart Sandra Bullock. But Sarah Michelle Gellar? Yep, the U.K.'s Daily Record reports that the one-time vampire slayer is trying to squeeze into those skimpy hotpants. Apparently, with the long-running "Buffy" TV series now finished, 26-year-old Sarah is anxious to establish herself as a bona fide big-screen action star.

One woman who is definitely not in the running is singer Jessica Simpson. But she is managing to keep tight-lipped about playing the lead in the next big movie based on a popular Marvel Comics series. "I don't know if your everyday person would know it," she recently told reporters, "but I can tell you this -- it's not Wonder Woman."

The most appropriate role for Simpson, at least in the appearance department would seemingly be Black Cat, Spider-Man's ally. But that's our two cents..

Cruise might be Mann's COLLATERAL

Director Michael Mann (ALI, THE INSIDER) has chosen the DreamWorks thriller COLLATERAL as his next project. Written by Stuart Beattie with a rewrite by Frank Darabont, COLLATERAL has been in development for about four years at DW. Mann's involvement isn't new; Coming Attractions was scooped as to Mann's interest in directing the project last October. What is new is the interest of the world's biggest action star, Tom Cruise. Cruise is considering playing the villain role in the picture, a hitman who takes a New York City cab driver hostage so he can travel around the city and make his hits. The cabbie is forced to take part in some of the killer's murders, which makes him an accessory to the act.

Cruise hasn't committed to starring in the film yet. According to Variety the actor and Michael Mann have been trying to find a project to collaborate on for a while now.

Details About New ALIEN Films

Details about the plots for ALIEN 5 and 6, if they ever get made.

Zap2It had the word:

Time to visit the razor and shave the head again, Sigourney, as the plotlines to "Alien 5 and 6" have now surfaced.

The ultra-successful "Alien" series will have the shaven Sigourney Weaver slotted to play Ripley as she fights off the seemingly indestructible beast. Weaver has previously said she'd be interested in reprising her role, which she has done four times since the original 1979 blockbuster.

She has said, "I'm not interested in returning back to Earth," yet sources say that much of the fifth film takes place when Earth is attacked.

Number five is set on Earth, with the planet under attack from alien warrior drop ships, which made their debut in the original "Alien" movie. In the process they make Earth look like an incubator while attacking, leaving alien eggs around the humans.

That's when Ripley realizes her dreams have played a role in what's happening and she evacuates and confines herself to a cell, but inevitably she will meet her nemesis face to face again.

Number six takes place on the home turf of the navigator of the ship. Aliens are taking over other plants and Ripley finds herself forced to turn to the dark side in order to save civilization.
