I agree too, before I purchased my DVDRecorder (Panasonic E30) I did a lot of research and found out that the Philips models were severely plagued with problems.

I really like my Panny though, VHS done in 4 hour mode looks as good as the original, plus it records on DVD-RAM so you can chase record without the need for a harddrive.

Plus, you pick one of these badboys up for about $300, put out a few flyers in the neighbourhood saying you'll transfer VHS to DVD and you've got yourself a nice new source of income and a BIG FAT BUSINESS TAX WRITEOFF!

p.s. 404, why in hells name are you paying for porn?

Bacon up that Sausage Boy

Philips is starting to saturate the stores

I was just in Best Buy on the weekend and saw stacks of the Philips DivX players. They dropped the price to $95 CAD.

To all of the Philips haters:

I must be lucky because because I bought a 30" Philips High-Res tv 12 years ago (paid a mint for it) and the picture is still as crisp as the day I bought. I know it's still early, but I've been checking the forums and the complaint so far is the small remote with no eject button. Petty fuckers.

Regardless, I'm sure you can get $95 worth out it.

Sorry, I'll clarify... Anything made by Philips that has moving parts will at some point fail spectacularly. I have to agree that they make (or used to make) damned good TV's.

Well I also have a Philips TV which must be at least 12 years old, and still works perfectly. I also have a Philips DVD player which I got around in 2000? Which has always and still does work perfectly.

Hold down the stop button on the Philips 642 and it'll eject. Have your maid put another in and hold it down again to close

i also have a Phillips DVP 642 and its worked out great so far. ive had it for about 8 months now and havent had any problems out of it. and plus it only cost $60 so i have gotten at least three times the enjoyment out of it. BTW, to eject a disc with the remote, just hold down the STOP button for 3 seconds and the disc will eject right out.

Philips DVP5960/37

f you want your player to play PAL divx even though your TV doesn't, here is how you make it region code free
This hack was successfully applied to the Philips DVP5960/37.

1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. Enter 138931
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
9. Press "OK" on the remote

Great Value

I have had my Philips Dvp-642 for almost a couple of years now and I have to say its worth every penny I paid for it..
(yes it has an eject disc mode...hold down the stop button..Duh! now Stfu!).. It plays almost everything you put into it.. Not to mention that you can play NTSC, PAL formats on it with a handy code that is easily found on the net.. I can shuffle from one dixv to the other xvid that I have burned onto DVD's.. This is a great value considering I paid $50 for the player.. This is my first experience with a Philips product and have been quite pleased..

erm, region has nothing to do with PAL/NTSC other than MOST region 2 DVDs are PAL and MOST region 1 DVDs are NTSC.

If your TV can't play take a PAL or NTSC signal then there is usually a setting in the DVD player to force it to output one or the other so can still watch your film.

AFAIK PAL/NTSC just determines the colour depth, resolution and framerate of the film.
