I didnt no there was a better source than xvid or divx. what might this source be called?

you miss my point.. its easy and cheap to get hardware that'll play back xvid without a problem, no need to convert it.

xbox + xbmc + cat5 cable = omg

can get dvd players that'll do it here for £30, probably not the greatest player on earth but thats next to nothing. encoding from such a compressed and lossy source takes time and lowers quality even more.

What about DV? huffyuv? mjpeg?

Anyway, back to the original topic, just thought it might be worth pointing out that in some cases it's better to use the DivX 5 or ffdshow decoders to play DivX 3 files - if there is any kind of corruption in the file then the DivX 3 decoder will freeze, but the other decoders will display the corrupt frames and fix the picture at the next keyframe.

and thus riseth the thread.

Seeing as though it's risen, I don't suppose any mod wants to go through it, take out the crap and leave in the useful answers and sticky it do they?

Then at least people saying I've downloaded x codec pack and can't get it to work could be pointed in this direction.

Pangalactic Fungaloid

Talking about sources for encoding from, HDTV > DVD. FoV's hdtv battlestar galactica is a good example where they compare to SFM's DVDRips.

The codec list is good, I'd suggest people get 'real alternative' as well. It's a codec that lets you play back realplayer files in mpc without having the shit realplayer software installed. Good for BBC stuff

and, of course, quicktime alternative.

With these codecs, and media player classic, you're sorted. Although i tend to install moonlight odio for ac3, but that's habit. I really dunno what's best.

if its just decoding that you need why not just install vlc player? it plays every file i have thrown at it yet and i have no other codecs on my pc since format a month ago.

maybe missing the point entirely here.....
