There's no hard and fast rule but you should probably go with the average user's desktop size and try not to exceed it as it will cause them to have to scroll two pages to the right to see the entire picture. I personally try and keep pictures below 1024x768.

Or you could just host it somewhere and post the link and then you can have it as large as you like!
