Mplayer is very nice. It plays .mkv files really nicely. I just can't run 1080i with it. Maybe my pc is to slow for it. Who knows. I can play 1080i files with Windows.
I don't run a Mac, I'm a snobby GNU/Linux zealot at heart ( least I admit it). By mplayer I mean the one found here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html (not sure if this is the same one you're talking about on mac or not, don't use them often enough).
It's multi-platform, plays everything you can throw at it and when you pass the right flags you an play 720p/1080i(some) rips on even shitty pc's like high endish p4s without issue (I love it, between mplayer and VLC you can really handle everything). /mplayer whoring

I know where the fuck has he been, I've finally reached his level of linux/mplayer whoring and he's not even around, nonsense I say.
I do use irssi! Since I'm a horrid IRC whore (it's embarrassing to actually admit how many networks I'm connected to at one time) I have two clients running, xchat and irssi, irssi on my shell for networks I'd rather not have my home IP shown. On EFnet it doesn't really bother me, and lets me test out lots of intrusion detection linux software since in the right channels you'll be portscanned/probed (sounds dirty) daily.
(shameless desktop screenshot plug: and that's only one side of my 'cube' (which is actually a pentagon since I use five 'virtual' desktops), use my laptop as an Ubuntu box that every six months (every new major release of ubuntu) I go big into theming it, gonna switch it up in October with the release of Intrepid Ibex.
