if you aren't lucky enough to have scene or secret vcdq ftp access the way to go is definitely usenet. the year or so I had giganews spoiled me rotten it was like the world was my own personal topsite and well worth the $30 a month I was paying (hear that media companies? since it was a REASONABLE price for me to CHOOSE the content and format *I* wanted, WITHOUT DRM, I was HAPPY to pay a fee for it HINT HINT) The only reason I haven't renewed my subscription is because money is tight and have stuck with a few priv torrent sites, long as you stay away from the 'major' "private" (quote crazy!) sites you really have little to worry about if thats the way you want to go, any of them worthwhile will support encrypted streams, as well as peerguardian and other's lists directly at the tracker, so it's impossible to reach into the swarm to grab IPs (of course there is *some* risk but that's the price you pay for not forking over to usenet).

I remember when torrents first started happening as a major release resource I decided to 'check it out' and got a cease and desist regarding Animal House from Universal Studios that I grabbed off a public tracker, and my brother just got nabbed for grabbing battlestar galactica off pirate bay, had to have a talk with him about that (honestly you'd think scifi would be happy any second their channel gets any more exposure with their budget and level of 'quality' programming) but haven't seen anything since mostly because if you keep it low profile things will go well for ya, if you need any advice para send me a pm and i'll be able to point ya in the right direction.

I've never used usenet, So that might be an option. I'd just have to find a decent service.

I've never heard of anyone getting nabbed using mIRC either, I'm sure both are much more safe than torrents.

Ha, it took me 5 minutes to get onto a server yesterday just to download anything, since I totally forgot how to do it, lol. I haven't used it in a few years.

Damn I was always careful before, I guess recently I've gotten careless. I got lazy with torrents since it was easy and I was on a private site for years, and they went bye-bye.

#1 moron right here!!!

When I did tech support for Mcleod USA I got a call from a woman stating, she got a letter in the mail from our ISP that said she had downloaded a copy of Shrek 2 and that she had to contact our offices and delete the movie. With my position I couldn't tell her we had just watched the same copy she downloaded that prior weekend at our office, lol. I had to legally tell her to delete it, and not to download anymore. There was no way we could track that information.

I also had to tell her the legal issues of downloading copyrighted material, lol.

$30 a month for Usenet is expensive. $14.99 is average and that was cool when the pound was so strong against the dollar. Costing a little bit more since sterling went the way of the Zimbabwe scheckel though but still well worth it.

yeah I should note that was actually the high price I paid when I switched over to unlimited d/l to really splurge and fill up my hard drive, you can get a 35GB/month plan from giganews for only $13 a month which should satisfy most people (and again, can't recommend giganews enough, I have a 30mbit home connection and it would flat out match it for download speed all the time, no exceptions combined with their massive retention plus great customer service when i dealt with them on a billing issue, overall amazing provider -- they should pay me for all the whoring I do for them).

Woof I say

Newshosting.com has unlimited for 14.99 ,retention not as long as giganews but completion rate is great, but as punzada said, giganews is the best.

i'm on uns and it's unlimited with 100+ day retention (some binaries as much as 150 days) and maxes out my 10mbit line.

$15 a month. not exactly pricey.

I'm paying for a 20mb download , so if i'm correct thats 2MB which is the usual speed i get with the private torrent sites i'm signed upto. So why the fuck would i want to pay for the exact same service elsewhere albeit a bit more "risk free"

1) many isps have bandwidth caps
2) many torrent sites require you to keep a certain global ratio or at least seed back to a .75+ ratio on each torrent
3) you never know who on the other end you're uploading potentially illegal content to

and 20mbit is 2.5MB/s not counting overhead, so yes around 2MB/s is about right, while you are maxing your line on torrents but there are still drawbacks that you should recognize, some people just like to avoid that risk altogether (show me one case besides a usenet provider that advertised "PAY US TO GIVE YOU ILLEGAL CONTENT" in which usenet subscribers have been sued or targeted directly).

Couldn't you make the same argument with mIRC? I maybe very wrong, but I've never heard of a leecher getting caught.
