It's true that Sky is a luxury, but the majority of users would find it hard to give up Sky+ functionality and would likely only downgrade their service rather than give it up. Now that HD boxes have come down in price and channel lineup increased it is likely that proliferation will increase as people find cheaper forms of entertainment.
Additionally Sky own exclusivity on many "must see" shows which they rent out to the other service providers whose coverage isn't as widespread as their own.
Remember when we had Astra and BSB - that became Sky how many years ago? Since then they've outsourced a number of services including customer support, installation, and box production; they've bought up a large number of show rights and partnered with US providers, and refined their service from analog to digital; from 60cm dishes to minidish, killed Tivo in the UK, and gone on to HD - which they're still a front-runner for.
Like it or not I don't see Sky disappearing in the near future, if ever. Content delivery may be big now but we don't have a network to support it en masse, which is where Sky Anytime succeeds - once they support personalised suggestions it will kill off the BT Vision offerings.
For those US readers wondering what we're talking about, Sky is our equivalent of DirecTV.
agree ,would rather cut down unneeded channels than kill the subscription
