i have no problems with movies being posted on usenet and since it is one of my sources i even appreciate it.

what i am not fond of is when they are posted in full within a 24 hour time period. usenet resources are limited and need to be used in a way that they spread around for everybody to use. i think when someone posts over a gig in one day its using more of those resources than they are 'entitled' to.

usenet posts should never consist of more than a half a CD of data per day. posting a 2 disc VCD in one day is to fast and the increased volume is causeing problems for the entire usenet system.

I think you hit the nail on the head, I think it makes them feel a bit less elite. Don't like the fact that people who don't devote their entire lives to the scene should be allowed access.

I think the order goes like this

P2P eg. Kazaa, EDonkey, Overnet, Etc. (A week or 2 after appeering on VcdQuality)
IRC eg. Fileservers(A few days, stupid queues)
Newsgroups eg. Usenet(A couple of days, quite often missing parts)
IRC eg. Xdcc's (When I have used, I get 60-80K a sec normally, no stupid 50 seperate parts to get.) (same day generally, there are exceptions and queues can mean it takes a day just to get a release. Great if downloading stuff midweek, never seem to queue except for divx dvd rips)
Private FTP's(Depends on the FTP but the ones I've been on same day, day before sometimes)
Topsites(Never been on one, pre vcdquality though)

Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I see it. I'm not at the top or bottom of the chain but I won't tell you which rung of the ladder I normally cohabit at.

PS 8/8/3 good copy of a bad film (kids seem to like it though).

usenet is always the first part of the internet to make use of new technologies. currently most usenet posters are using something known as par files that can be used to replace missing parts or repair corrupted parts. incompletes are no longer an issue except for on the most incompetent news servers.

no stupid 50 seperate parts to get? no instead you download a tar file then extract all the parts then extract the bin and cue. so you get 50 seperate rar's PLUS a tar and an extra 700 meg on your hard drive before you get the movie extracted. also what do you do when the served archive is missing a part? or how about when the archive is corrupt? or how about when the parts all get scrambled names?

you also forgot to mention that for the most part VCD's are offered as 2 seperate archives so that will mean getting into, and waiting out a queue 2 seperate times.

another thing is that NO ROOM gets every release onto public servers 0-day. so you will need a good repitoir of places to look. you can get help by searching for "xdcclist" sites with google but even then finding a queue slot to get into is very difficult for less experienced users.

IRC as a whole gets releases 0-day but it is spread across dozens of rooms on several different networks. to a majority of people IRC would be no faster than newsgroups. to those that dont mind putting some effort in then IRC can be a 0-day source but dont try to make it out like there are no queues to download VCD's because there certainly are for the first few days after release and they are generally filled by the people that know how to /timer themself into a full queue.

I personally don't care where anyone gets stuff from, whatever suits you, use it.

I certainly don't have the patience or time to learn how to sift through rooms, channels etc, and I don't exactly NEED any of this stuff as soon as possible, so I wait for it to come on usenet. If it doesn't then feck it, what I never had in the first place I won't miss!

I've never had anything off usenet that I couldn't complete with PAR's or friends re-posting a few fills for me. Works fine for me.


BTW, I watched this film last night and thought it was really funny (especially the Turtle Club scene!), good video and sound.

Man i dont know about usenet im on a buisness network at work and they cannot control the bandwith in irc or know where its comin from so i leach up with irc thats why i use it..They constantly are controlling the internet and i would have been caught years ago so as far as irc its the best as far as im concerned.."IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT" and for invalid tars and corrupts simply go to chan #incomplete warez and request the file that corrupts your bin and VOILA your done. Takes no longer than a few hours for a movie at 150-200k-a-sec. Im not complainin!

I've got 2 120 gigs in 1 machin and 140gig in my "TV" Server both networked so an extra 700 megs isn't really a problem, now I know it's a bit of a faux par to discuss such things but #vmz_incomplete fills out my missing archive (Rare at least for me but has happened) also I can get the missing file off Usenet of course. I agree you do have to queue twice (Sometimes though you'll get a gig+ archive with all the cd's in it) but you can queue on 2 different xdcc's of course. Not everything's 0 day of course (including vcdquality of course & Usenet) I've nothing against such a beast in fact I try to tame it from time to time but I stand by it I personally prefer IRC to newsgroups I'm sure a lot people feel the other way. Topsites are of course the best and private FTP's are certainly better if they have what you're looking for.

my whole point is just that IRC is not an easy 'beast to tame'.

personally i consider newsgroups and IRC to be complete equals in the distribution chain.

usenet might take a little longer sometimes but it is easier to lear and use.

IRC might be harder to learn but it is generally faster than usenet, IF you are good.

of course this only applies to VCD's. for smaller size releases like games or music usenet just eats up IRC.
