Volcano High

Watched Volcano High a couple of days ago. As folks on IMDb point out, a lot of this film is lost in the subtitle translation. Sure, it's just a visual effects flic, but I had to watch certain parts 2 or 3 times in order to understand who was against whom and for what reason. I imagine that Korean viewers wouldn't have had that problem -- I often had to do some extra interpreting on the subtitles to figure out what was really going on.

In any case, it's a fun film with a little too much anime-style yelling and screaming during the fight scenes.

7/10

I saw Volcano High awhile back, It was good except for the fact that the version I saw had been dubbed by rappers. "nothing against rap" But Snoop Dog can't act even in voice overs. kind of lessened the film. I was temped to watch it muted and with the closed caption on. Other than that it was good.

Ouch, that sounds awful. It's worth watching the original Korean version just to hear Jyan Ryang (sp?) over-enunciate his name repeatedly.

Ok so even though none of you gave me input on either Tsui Harks Vampire Hunters or Vampire Effect i went ahead and queued it on netflix anyways. They both came in yesterday and i watched both of them last night. And i most say both of them though 2 very different styles of movies they both were awesome. Tsui Harks Vampire Hunters was set in 19th century China. It follows 4 young Vampire Hunters ( Rain, Wind, Thunder and Lightning) who are not only tracking the king vampire but looking for their sefu (master) who dissapeared after the last encounter with the king vampire. There is really nothing i can reasonably compare this to, but it was a really good movie.
But it gets better, i enjoyed myself so much watching Vampire Effect there isn't a word i can use to explain it. It has definatly made my favorites list. In this we follow a vampire hunter by the name of Reese who is tracking a european vampire who has been stealing royal vampires essence to become a master vampire and be able to walk in the day as well as a hellova lot of added physical strenghth. I think i could call this Underworlds asian counterpart minus the werewolves, it is done in a very similar style except for the fact that it has more comedy relief. The action in this is awesome, we even get to see 2 hot asian starlets (one being an asian pop superstar from what i read) battle the main vampire towards the end. Jackie chan also makes a cameo in this film which is pretty cool. I can definatly recommend both of these films to any horror/action movie fan confidently. But if you can only get one i would go with Vampire Effect as it was better in my opinion. When you watch Vampire Hunters i think your better off using the subs as i compared the subs with the dub and it seems alot is lost in the dub for this flick. For Vampire Effect your safe with the dub being that the voiceover was pretty good not cheap and corny sounding like many others, and the voiceover and the subtitles match exactly.

dubs blow, i've watched one dub (out of choice) in the last 6 or so years and that was princess mononoke, as i was watching it with friends and was fairly impressed with the cast list. guess what, i didn't like it that much and traded it. i wish i hadn't now as i probably would've really liked it if i'd taken the 2nd chance to watch it properly and it was the LE with a nice book.

yesterday we went to see gozu (miike) it was pretty damn cool, and very, very odd. i don't wanna spoil, but both the beginning and end bits are just so great and disturbing its well worth a watch. slow paced and mixes a very linear plot with one that makes no sense at all. definitely worth a view.

next week its internal affairs I + II (I from divx, II in theater) then the week after that its Tale of Two Sisters (theater). i'm loving the fact i get to see all these films in the theater for free. i love my friends.

Yah but as i said with Vampire Effect the voice acting is actually pretty good and matches the subtitles word for word. Since you mentioned Takashi Miike, have you seen Happiness of the Katakuris? If so, was it any good?

before you go out and buy another 2 copies, check out videohelp.com and see if there are any region hacks for your dvd player. if there arent any you might as well go out and buy a cheepo player thats regionfree/hackable, itll probably cost the same as rebuying the movies or just a little bit more. it would also be a good investment if you plan on buying more asian/foreign dvd's.

anyways if you still want to rebuy them try www.yesasia.com or www.dvdasian.com, when you buy make sure they are region 0, afaik the starmax and tartan ntsc 5.1 version (br1) are the only region 0 copies.

Slacker...

Just got Battle Royale 1 and 2... finally. The fist one was cool as hell. I loved that informational video they got before departing . And the deaths of the characters were awesome. The second was, different than the first. I liked it. But I was expecting the same thing in the second. They seem like different movies. I probably would have got more out of it had I read the books. But the movies are cool just the same. They are both worth watching. Now, if my damn Natural City DVD would only get here...

-Battle Royale 1: watched -
-Battle Royale 2: watched -
1,000,000 movies remaining...

Hola~~!

Lemme list some asian films that I think are awesome. I wont bother adding reviews as most of them have already been reviewed. I'll add a few one liners :P

Battle Royale - A DAMN good movie, first movie that got me into asian flicks.

Battle Royale: Requiem - While not as good as the first one, this is still a very good movie, ignore imdb and other sites that say the 2nd one blows. It doesnt. Stop comparing it to the first, they are different stories :\

The Killer - A legendary movie. I own the R3 DVD and when I get some cash I'm DEFINATELY purchasing the better quality HKL version.

Hard Boiled - Recently purchased the R3 DVD and I was VERY impressed. Definately a must see.

Moon Child - While a lot of people where disappointed with this movie I thought it was awesome. Good storyline, Good acting and good action scenes.

Shaolin Soccer - Pretty good movie. Had a few good laughs in it. Would have been better if they spent some more $$$ on the effects though as the ball looked too fake in a lot of places. Overall a good entertaining film though.

Fulltime Killer - A very decent Andy Lau flick, not much to say about it. Its just pretty damn good!

...Ing - This movie is AWESOME. Get it!

My Sassy Girl - Yet another awesome korean movie. Had me crying with laughter in some places!

Windstruck - The prequel to My Sassy Girl, while not as good as MSG, it is still very entertaining and has some hilarious moments in it.

Shu Qi: True Woman/Whisper Of The Wave/Tender Feeling - 3 different DVDs, same thing. Each 1 is about an hour long and consists of Shu Qi naked. Doesnt get much better than this

Zatoichi (2003/2004 Remake) - Not sure if its 2003 or 2004 but this movie is great. Takeshi Kitano plays the part amazingly and the action scenes are well done.

Bullet In The Head - This movie is just mind blowing. I watched this and I was just amazed that anyone could make such an amazing masterpiece of a movie. I was SO impressed with it that I plan to purchase it when my cheapass gets some god damn money :P

Hero - Amazing flick. Amazing soundtrack. Amazing Actors. Amazing Cinematography. Simply Amazing!

There are many more to list but I dont want to start a big 10 page long essay :P

I'm still trying to hunt down Natural City, it looks amazing. Cant afford to buy it yet someone rip to xvid and send to me :P

Chinese Ghost story

and I've just seen shogun assassin (Which is cut from severl films in a series with a cracking english voiceover and great '80s synth.

Both of those I would recommend.

May have already mentioned it but I watched the Hidden Fortress again and it was even better than the first time I watched it a must for all star wars fans or Kurosawa fans.

The Life Aquatic

(trying to keep this alive)

has anyone seen "My Sassy Girl?"

i just bought the dvd and this movie is great...

its a romantic comedy (korean)...but its a really really good romantic comedy...its not cheesy at all.....both of the stars in this movie really has good chemistry...

the movies makes you smile throughout every scene, lots of laughter too.....i highly suggest all the people who like "asian cinema" to go watch this

10/10!

"My Sassy Girl" is based on an on-line serial written by Kim Ho-sik that detailed his relationship with his off-the-wall college girlfriend. This was eventually compiled into a best-selling book and caught the attention of director Kwak Jae-young, who wrote the script for the film. The story kicks off with college student Kyun-woo (Korean pop singer Cha Tae-hyun, in his feature film debut) crossing paths with a drunk girl (Jun Ji-hyun of "Il Mare") on a late-night subway. Just before she passes out, the girl looks at Kyun-woo and calls him 'honey'. The other passengers, assuming him to be the hapless girl's boyfriend, demand that Kyun-woo look after her. After carrying her on his back for what seems to be miles, Kyun-woo drops the girl off at a motel. But instead of leaving her and getting on his way, Kyun-woo finds himself intrigued by the nameless girl and vows to do whatever he can to heal her sorrow.
