lol baha maybe you should watch it twice. but then again, i checked imdb and people are making the movie seem much deeper than it already is. well this is what i got out of the movie.

***SPOILERS***

i dont think he died in the prison. he just practiced hiding behind the guard and got so good at it that if you were to turn around, you wont see him because he's already behind you.
he didnt intentionally set the gun to fire. he had to get out of there in a hurry and left it there by mistake.
you dont remember what the boxer did to him after he found him in his home?

*****************

or maybe im just wrong about all this.

LOL i think we both need to watch it again i think the 'hiding' is deeper than that...it's just too simplistic for the movie (and ki-duk in general)...cos it's not just the prison guard, it's the husband as well. i've got a geeling that his 'shadow existence' is just that...he's not a ghost exactly, but his ability to be a shadow means he's there in spirit but not physically, so he can live in the same house as her and her husband without really being there...just my take on it.

the gun: no, he didn't leave it by mistake - he never takes anything that he fixes, he always leaves them...kinda like rent i s'pose (remember when he was arrested, they couldn't hold him because he'd never stolen anything).

and the boxer, yeah, he gave him a slapping for breaking into his house...i dunno, to me that's acceptable behaviour, not something that warrants revenge.

but, you see, i was fairly sure he'd died because i'm sure the girl in the car died...and so i *thought* that it was a sort of moral balance: he killed her, he got killed.

maybe i'm looking for things that aren't there i still enjoyed it even if i don't know what the heck i watched LOL

Inugami: watchable, reminded me of nang-nak a little bit
Shikoku: shaky handycam all the time. had to turn it off after 10 minutes
Unborn but forgotten: nothing special, a cheap ringu rip off
The Scarlett Letter: outstanding drama!!!! a must-see!!!

some other asian stuff i recently watched:
Shutter: a thai ring-like movie. not very original, but scary.
Azumi: not the best work from the man who brought us "versus" and Alive

Here is another great korean movie: Spider Forest

it's kind of a mystery thriller, david lynch style. sometimes hard to follow with switches between past and present, but very good story an brilliant directing/acting. highly recommended!

Any one seen The Red Spectacles or Stray Dog? Directed by Mamoru Oshii, “Ghost in the shell“. A friend told me about them wondering if they are worth buying.

Funny you should mention those! I've been trying to convince a guy to release the movie trilogy boxset:
Stray.Dog.1991.DVDRip.XviD-QiX
Red.Spectacles.1987.DVDRip.XviD.AC3.2CD-Oshii
Talking.Head.1992.DVDRip.XviD-QiX
...but he keeps promising and not delivering I'll probably end up buying the boxset, but I'd really like to see them first. GitS & GitS2 I like, but although it's OK, I'm not a big fan of Angel''s Egg (tho to be fair I had a bad VHS rip).

I did get hold of Avalon a few weeks ago. It's live action (but almost animation) and it's in Polish...not dubbed, he made it in Poland - I don't know why. It's excellent, the storyline is that the characters are part of a videogame world and you get all the features of video games through their world...lags, levels, weapons, everything. Definitely worth seeing!

Everybodys probably seen this but its so good its still worth mentioning.

Kung Fu Hussle. - Admitidly while it is very westernised and Stephen Chow is more commercially aware than most of his counterparts in the asian film industry, its still the most fun I've ever had watching a flick.Purists might say that Chow has sold his soul, but maybe, just maybe, this could be one Asian director that will make a worldwide impact without having to come to the USA to make inferior Hollywood remakes.I know there has been others but nothing that lasted too long.I think this guy possesses the right amount of magic to make it really happen.

Also Infernal Affairs was the best Cop V Mob flick I've ever seen period. It just doesnt seem right though that they made a sequel.I mean you couldnt just imagine a Usual Suspects 2 or for that matter La Confidential 2, could you.For the record Infernal Affairs 2 was rubbish.

Do you have any special skills?

what i've watched recently:

Red Eye : standard horror flick, nothing special. just watch if you cant get enough of asian spooky stuff

Premonition aka Yogen: another ringu like flick zzZZzz with a little final destination touch

Arahan : some nice supernatural fighting scenes towards the end, but before that its looooooong 60 minutes

Zee Oui: a thai drama based on real events about a multiple child murderer who was raised by his mother in the believe, that eating human hearts cures his lung sickness. sounds sick and promising for gore-hounds, in fact its "just" an interesting story shot in beautifull pictures but not much blood etc

2 more worth watching:

Sisily 2km aka "How to catch a virgin ghost": nice comedy/gangster/ghost mixture. wont be everybodys darling, but give it a try.

Blood & Bones : Takeshi Kitano in a leading role again as a violent, sadistic father and businessman.

yeah, this one was pretty good...pretty grim as well. the director waited 6 years for takeshi to agree to do it! he had the funding and everything was set to roll, but he refused to make it without kitano...and it was worth the wait cos it is his best performance in a long, long while.

haven't heard of sisily 2km before, i'll keep an eye out for that one, cheers.

over the past coupla nights i just watched the Mushashi Miyamoto ("Samurai") trilogy, there's a few versions of the story on film but the best ones are generally accepted to be the Toshire Mifune ones directed by Hiroshi Inagaki:
Samurai: Musashi Miyamoto
Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple
Samurai III: Duel on Ganryu Island

if 'Twilight Samurai' or 'When the last sword is drawn' (Mibu gishi den) did it for you then these will too, but the action isn't as well choreographed and although all 3 movies are about the rise of a great samurai and his conflict with his greatest rival, the movies are driven by the story and not the action. i liked em so much i've just gotten Incident at Blood Pass, another Inagaki film with Mifune as a ronin. but be warned, almost every female in the Samurai trilogy is likely to find Mifune's total disinterest in them a huge turn-on and make em a quivering whiney wreck at any moment...and they annoyingly do every 3 minutes or so

aaaaaaand another one:

Devilman : this is an adaption of the anime/manga series and its trash galore. stupid dialogues, bad acting and cgi FX between average and cheap. the only thing i really liked were the manga like frames cut inbetween some fighting scenes. would recommend this to fans of the series and to people aged under 14

it's fuckin awful! made all the worse cos it shoulda been brilliant, it takes some real skill to make the source material appear this bad

people have been panning it since the cam was out in nov/dec, but i figured it was just a bad cam and resisted watching it, waiting for the DVD or better still a cinema release. finally came out on DVD about 2 weeks ago, but it doesn't have any english subs, so i waited another week for the srt's...a total waste of time - you'll have more satisfaction poking yourself in the eye with a sharp stick.

in the words of frank drebin "nothing to see here...move on...keep moving."

yesterday i've watched:

Muscle Heat aka Masuuruhiito

Plot: in 2009 a new drug conquers japan, it increases the consumers body power. an ex con has to go undercover to investigate connections between dealers and cage fighters. his friend gets killed, he wants revenge, bla bla bla

guess what, this movie sucks. stupid plot, very few and short fighting scenes, two badly directed slomo shoot-outs and a boring grand finale.

avoid this one, except your a die hard martial arts fan.

www.pandora.com/

watched quite a few decent movies recently, but keep forgetting to mention em here.

saw Survive Style 5+ a coupla nights ago. decent japanese movie, funny in places and mildly amusing in others, there's a mean edgey nature to it that only bursts through in a few scenes (but you're never sure when it'll happen), definitely worth checking out. 4 concurrent stories: one a totally surreal fantasy of a wife that won't stay murdered, another of a stressed ad-exec woman, one about 3 jack-the-lads with an undercurrent of homo activity, and a story of a regular family whose father develops a very strange condition...and all linked by Vinnie Jones as a hitman obssessed with the function in life of those he hits. (Jones' role is a bit shit in this one, so don't expect his regular gangster shennanigans.)

by far and away the best thread is the story of the wife and the husband that wants her dead...pure fantasy and quite slick. i wish i could find a decent pic of the chick who plays the wife cos she is really, really sexy, this is the best i can do, but she looks more "cum-f-me" in the film:

give it a look-see. if you're willing to just chill and go with it you'll enjoy it (i watched it stoned so i didn't need a "why" and "because"), but if you're looking for a movie with a reason or moral then maybe this isn't the one for you.

Do you have any special skills?

i wasted yesterdays time with the following two movies:

1) The Eye 10 : the pang brothers third installment of the eye series starts off quite promising with a buddhist exorcism. since i haven't seen part two i didnt know, if this had anything to do with it, but it turned out to be unimportant. then it goes on with a group of young people on vacation in thailand. they sit together telling campfire tales and one of them pulls out an antique book about 10 rituals to summon ghosts. the rituals include ouja board sessions (wow, this is new to the genre), playing hide and seek in the woods (one of them has to carry a black cat in order to see ghosts - the others have to find the person, then they will see the ghost too ....WTF) or going to a graveyard and covering your eyes with mud to see them. during this, one of the teens gets lost, the others go back home and try to live their normal lifes but (big surprise) the haunting goes on ...
this movie sucks horses ass big time. even though its technically quite solid, the plot goes from thin to nearly non-existent. you can count the thrills with one hand and even the pangs attempt to add some humour doesnt safe the movie, it even makes it more annoying. AVOID!!!

2) The Circle : an imprisoned serial killer confesses the rape and murder of at least 5 women. this leads to an investigation and it turns out, that the psychopath is impotent. to this point the circle looks like an ok se7en/silence of the lambs rip-off, but then the psychopaths' girlfriend shows up, claiming they are the reincarnation of a couple that lived in 1930. ok, a little plot twist adding a little mystery and supernatural stuff. but after 60 minutes the plot totally loses its tracks: the killer is sentenced to death, his girlfriend gets hit by a car and dies after threatening the attorney who starts to believe the whole reincarnation story. the attorney now gets flashbacks from their past and tries to find out whats behind their story - so the plot takes another twist and ends as a drama/romance. the couple in 1935 is found frozen to death in the mountains while getting it on, for some reason the doctos cut out her unborn baby and their stuck genitals (???!!!???!?).
what can i say more? wtf was wrong with the people making this movie? say no to drugs.

New Blood : three people meet at a blood bank when donating their rare bloodtype for a couple, that just tried to commit suicide. the woman dies, the man remains in a coma. after that the three of them are haunted by visions of the bald deceased woman and strange things occure. they soon find out, what the raging ghost wants to tell them ...
this movie is all about atmosphere, it starts pretty weird and gives you a non-stop uncasual feeling for the whole 90 minutes with dark rooms, empty corridors, creepy shadows and strange sounds. this is the big plus. on the other hand the story lacks of deepness. its very slow paced, no big moments of thrill or action.
i would recommend it though, it was way better than all the crap i watched recently.
