Thumbs up Review: How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003)

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003) Review by Michael Portillo.

Slush mush and gush. Yes folks, here we go with Hollywood's cinematic offering for Valentine's Day 2003 (ok, so it was a couple weeks ago bleh, but whatcha gonna do?). As is typical with Hollywood, we would expect nothing less than a super smoochy luvvie-kissie-smoocjie-woochie chocolates and hankies chick flick. This year we are dished up a big helping of madness and debauchery and big swoonsome romance with the latest Kate Hudson vehicle, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. Now guys, don't laugh, but this movie was pretty good!

Andie Anderson is a budding writing superstar and commandeer of the focal 'How To...' column in the top selling women's magazine Composure. Having run out of ideas and the rest of the staff coming up with nothing more than stale plans, Andie takes charge of the situation by playing off her best friends recent split with her boyfriend by devising a new 'how-to' idea, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. The idea sparks huge approval from her boss who instructs her to go forth and seek her man and produce said article.

Such man is none other than Ben. A hotshot marketing guy out to seek approval from his boss to take charge of the latest company project for DeLauer; an ultra-snooty diamond retailer. To win the pitch his boss decides he has 10 days to find a woman to fall in love with him to bring to the latest DeLauer collection showcase. Ben and Andie meet in the same bar that very night and so begins the next 116 minutes of frolics and madcap humour that only Hollywood can serve up in these all too familiar romantic comedies.

Both Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey play their parts very well, and for a movie of this genre the pair have an excellent on-screen chemistry; playing off each other expertly. Although at times i found the movie slightly irritating and somewhat obvious, i enjoyed it. It's what a romantic comedy is about. It's designed to make you forget about your worries in the outside world and spend a couple of hours glued to the screen lost in a world of fun and romance, tugging at your heartstrings making you feel like you can acheive anything!

Supported by an excellent cast, shot and directed superbly and supported by a good (if somewhat standard) chick flick soundtrach, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is a solid slice of entertainment. Romantic comedies are usually those watch once and dispose movies; How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is an exception to this rule. Expect to see this one on TV at Christmas in a couple of years time and for many holiday seasons after it.

Overall this is a fun little movie. Don't ask too much of it and you will reap it's rewards. This is the movie Just Married should have been.

Final Score: 8/10 ''Benny boo boo...boo boo boo!''
