Box Office Numbers Weekend of April 25-27

I didnt predict Identity would take the top spot this week..but I am sure glad it did..a couple of surprises on the top 10 this week

1- Identity $16,225,263 / $16,225,263
2- Anger Management $15,006,174 / $103,524,440
3- Holes $12,552,722 / $36,378,174
4- Malibu's Most Wanted $7,337,473 / $23,840,528
5- Confidence $4,563,588 / $4,563,588
6- Bulletproof Monk $4,402,635 / $18,957,471
7- What a Girl Wants $3,235,190 / $32,853,869
8- Phone Booth $3,007,474 / $40,173,290
9- It Runs in the Family $2,804,441 / $2,804,441
10- The Real Cancun $2,108,796 / $2,108,796

Does anyone else agree with me that society has taken a turn for the worst with The Real Cancun making the top 10?
Is Holes outperforming or underperforming?
Is Malibus Most Wanted a hit or to soon to call?
Did Confidence and It Runs in The Family have good opening weekends?

These questions and much more are open for debate..enjoy

Oh..just to bust balls..Spiderman 2003

36- Daredevil $126,352 / $100,806,279 right above Kangaroo Jack

I'm actually happy it ranked at number 10. My fear was it getting the top 3. For a movie like that to premiere at #10, is basically for it to bomb. Just look how little money it made. Would I be happier if it was 20? 30? Yes. But hey it did awful, I can't complain :}

Well, I'll give my opinion on the above below:
1. I don't agree at all. I think society made a turn for the better actually. When a movie opens in 2,000+ theatres, it's pretty much guaranteed at least an opening of $1,500,000. And when a studio opens a movie in 2,000+ theatres, it means they expect it to do somewhat well. MGM was not expecting "It Runs in the Family" to do well, so they cut down the amount of theatres they originally planned to open it in and opened it in 1,207 theatres. "It Runs in the Family," probably played in as many screens as it did theatres. (Well, none of the megaplexes opened it in two screens in Washington/Virginia/Maryland) Now, New Line expected an okay opening (I mean closer to 10 million than 2 million) for "The Real Cancun," because of the popularity of reality TV shows, and the success Jackass had, and it probably was played in something closer to 2,750 screens, as some theatres probably played in two screens, etc. So, if you keep that in mind, and look at it's pathetic $932 per theater average, (even "Town and Country" which opened in 1 more theater than The Real Cancun, was able to crack a $1000 per theater average) you'll know it's a bomb. But, the reason why studios like these kind of movies is because they cost next to nothing to make!
2. Holes is outperforming. We can easily call "Anger Management" a hit, it's cracked 100 mil. Anger Management fell 40 % this week compared with last, and fell 40 % after it's great opening weekend. I thought Tuck Everlasting bombed, and both Holes and Tuck Everlasting were similar in a way, that they were both made from Disney, were children's modern classic books, and had a good cast (Sissy Spacek/Sigourney Weaver). Holes only fell 23% last week, so it's showing some power. It will be staying in the charts for a while.
3. Malibu's Most Wanted had a somewhat heavy advertising campaign. It fell 41.8 %, and I'll compare it with Head of State for now. Head of State got something close to both Malibu's opening and second weekends. It had 13.5 mil the first weekend and maybe 8.0 the second week, and with the weekdays, had a total of 25 million. 3 weeks later, it's made 11 million more, and if it's lucky, will end it's run at 40 million. The production cost for Head of State was 35.2 million. Not much of a hit. Malibu's Most Wanted, on the other hand, cost 15 million to make, and after it's second week, has made around 24 million. It's a bigger hit than Head of State, but also, Head of State is a bigger hit than it! Looking at the per theater average, Head of State was way higher, and was shown in less theaters. Malibu's Most Wanted had 2,500 theaters, and probably 3,000 screens, and a smaller opening weekend. You can call it a hit if Warner Bros. continues advertising and spreads it in more theatres.
4. Confidence had a mediocre opening weekend. It had great reviews, but wasn't advertised heavily. It Runs in the Family may have surpassed expectations a bit, looking at it's advertising and reviews. It was, again, a mediocre opening.
