Question Perhaps ignorant question here...

Do DVD players (such as the $69 US Apex 1200/1500) play .mpeg's? I've been in the habit of burning movies in this format because I've yet to get a DVD player. I use VCDGear 2.0 to rip bin/cue's to mpeg and use Sasami2K or WMP to watch them, and I'm considering the purchase of a low-end unit. Any help is appreciated and thank you...

vcd

Don't use VCDgear. Just burn the bin/que files (the disc image). THat should give you a working VCD that will play on many stand alone players. The apex should play most everything. You can check out which dvd can play what at vcdhelp.com on their dvd player compatibility list.

pjeer?

A few models will play raw MPEGS, but i dont think the Apex is one of them.

My Dansai (Cheap Eastern brand available in uK) plays raw MPEG off the disc, but u dont get any control (can't fast forward or rewind) but its handy for mixing mpeg1/mpeg2 music videos on the same disc.

Thanks for your help all.

I went ahead and bought an Apex 1200 model at Circuit City for $64.95 today. I plugged it in and pushed in the power button... and there it sat. The tray wouldn't eject to accomodate anything so I guess I need to hurry back to CC before they close. Crap. Is this a common issue with these low-end players?

apex

Other than the centropy issue, everyone that I know that has owned an Apex has liked it. It's not the greatest player, but it seems to play almost everything you throw at it. I'm guessing that you just got a dud.

apex loses

i've been told by friends who have bought apex's, that they've got up to 3 non-working players, when exchanging, in a row. apparntly their is basicalyl a 1:3 chance you'll get a working one. those who gett them love them, but i'd say splurge and buy a pioneer dv-xxx

Retarded Idiot!

i have personally purchased 4 apex AD-1500 dvd players and one had to be exchanged so i guess you have a 3 out of 4 chance you will get a good one but it happens and sometimes you get one that wasnt handled well in shipping. anyway the one that didnt work all i had to do was bring it back and walk out with a new one that worked great. wait wouldnt that make it a 4 out of 5 chance of getting a good one???

BTW yes it does play some raw mpg's off a data CD

as others have confirmed, raw mpegs do work. all depends on what size and bitrate, since you are using VCD compliant MPEGs you should be fine.
