Review (2003) Down with Love Renee Zellwegger and Ewan McGregor
Down with Love Movie Review
Ewan McGregor is positively an enigma, he can't act, but his stock in movie acting went up with the dreadful Moulin Rouge, critics liked up, I did not, and becoming Obi Wan Kenobi in the current Star Wars Trilogy, which concludes in 2005.
In a movie that pays homage to my mothers favorite actress, Doris Day, Renee Zellwegger (who got robbed of her oscar) Barbara Novak, a small town girl, who comes to Manhattan with her Jackie Kennedy like suit, and Doris Day attitude, to publish a manifesto called Down with Love. The Book advises women to basically call for equal rights with men.
McGregor plays a Rock Hudson ladies man, who is the star writer for Know magazine, a spy magazine for Men's Journalism. Carter had been ordered by his editor to do a story on Barbara. But Carter is use to dating stewardesses having them over at his pad and having them leave the next morning never to see them ever again. He decides to put Barbara to the test and see if she cannot live with love, putting on his best charms and trying with all his might not to seduce her.
Director Peyton Reed (Cheerleading comedy Bring It On) I think strikes gold as he finds the right chemistry between his two lead actors to make this romantic comedy work.
Down with Love is not the best romantic comedy I have seen but it does rank up there with one the best and shakes my bad vibes of Ewan McGregor for now.
Down with Love opens in theatres on May 16,2003
Down with Love is rated PG13 for mild language and sexual situations.
My rating: an emphatic 10 of 10.
