The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

Here's my take which is extremely different from MG's...:

This league is nothing extraordinary. Director Stephen Norrington tries to mix the old-fashioned Victorian era with a gallon of the Hollywood formula to a 50 million dollar opening, aka the shit-tastic CGI-driven movie. (The Hulk, Daredevil, Scooby Doo) This attempt fails to impress.

LXG features a set of 19th century extraordinary gentlemen (and one woman) such as Captain Nemo, the Dracula-trained vampire Mina Harker, the Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, the pre-Bruce Banner/Hulk: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Tom Sawyer, and Sean Connery…er…Allan Quartermain.

Sean Connery, who also co-produced the film, huffs and puffs and tries to blow us away, and as usual, he does a great job. However, you can only watch a great actor for so long and think your watching a phenomenal movie. Norrington obviously chooses to focus on Connery most of the time, and if he actually used the other “extraordinary” people, the movie could have possibly been a fun ride. Just when it feels like it's about to become a decent adventure movie, Norrington makes us sit through some very odd action and just, horrid dialogue. I was bored within 30 minutes, so, perhaps now you get while MG called it the "sleeper of 2003." I'd give LXG a 2/10.

I'm in total agreement. It's pretty sad when the only 2 halfway interesting characters in the film are the humans with no abilities except good aim with guns. The invisible man started out kind of cool, but they burned that bridge in a big fuckin hurry. The rest of the characters sucked. And did they ever explain how the vampire chick could go outside during the day, I guess that's what's so extraordinary about her, since she didn't do anything else the whole time. The plot is as bad as X-Men 2's middle scenes, only in that movie there were interesting characters to keep you awake. Stay far away from LXG.

I think I did more laughing in this movie then I did for Spaceballs, only cause I didn't understand where the story was going, and HYDE was hilarious. I thought this movie had great promise but it let me down right quick after the meetup of the characters.
