Review: Pirates of the Carribean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
yarr me'earties! the seas have been a bit quiet on the pirate front for a while, then all of a sudden we get Sinbad (Disney) Pirates of the Carribean (Disney) and Peter Pan (Dis..wait.. damn!)
but this is probably the most far out disney film i've ever sat thru. for a start is its rating (PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK) is unlike any other of their other movies, and the storyline is a lot more adult orientated rather than containing adult moments, even if the kids will enjoy it too. all in all, ignore the disney tag, sit down and enjoy.
from the start, there's one star of the show - johnny depp. sure the girls maybe wooing over orlando bloom, and yeah his role in the film is played decently, depp shows the rest what acting is all about. apparently basing his character on keith richards, the guy has so many pure laugh out loud lines i was in histerics over what i thought was going to be a serious film. and the thing is, it IS pretty much a serious film, just with comic relief in a much better form than most comedies can even pull off.
at 133mins (imdb lists two running times, with no detail why there's 10mins difference between them) its fairly long, but doesn't get boring. the special effects are used subtly and the sword fighting is great to watch. we've waited years for another decent swashbuckling adventure, and now we've got a corker. in the uk its not received anything in the way of hype yet, but out of the rest of the summer "blockbusters" (hulk, t3, charlies angels full throttle, legally blonde 2) POTC leaves them all in dust.
the story revolves around "Captain" Jack Sparrow , pulling into port ready to acquire himself a new ship, when he gets inadvertantly involved in the near drowning of the governors daughter. when she's kidnapped by even worse pirates than himself, he's employed by Will Turner to go rescue her. but who's side is Jack on?
its an old fashioned fantasy/adventure, with a bit of a romance twist (but only just) thats just been lacking in any real "good" form of late. maybe it took the disney touch to create such a great character in Jack, but i'm not complaining. from the titling there's been rumours that a sequel is very possible, and if Mr Depp signs on the line, i know i'll be first in queue to see it. brilliant.
kick ass action that'll keep you laughing till the end. 9/10
{this is coming from the most ardant non-disney fan in the west }
