Review : Buffalo Soldiers (2001) Starring Joaquin Phoenix
OK, this is my first review, so go easy on me!
Buffalo Soldiers (2001) Starring Joaquin Phoenix.
*Review contains minor spoilers*
I thought I’d give my thoughts on this great film, as I went to see it last week and noticed that there didn’t seem to be any copies of it going around, so you lot may not know much about it.
Set in Germany just before the Berlin Wall comes down, the movie shows life in an army supply base. Phoenix plays Ray Elwood, sort of a secretary type on the base dealing with paperwork mostly. His completely inept superior is played superbly by Ed Harris.
The plot revolves around Elwoods black market dealings, selling all kinds of American products to the Germans, dabbling in a bit of drug dealing amongst his fellow troops etc. His operation is running smoothly until a new “Top” comes onto the base (played by Scott Glen) bringing a long military career and all the insider knowledge that comes with it. He knows instantly that Elwood is “The Man” and sets about bringing his operation down. Elwood decides that if he’s gonna fuck with me, then I’m gonna fuck with him. So he starts dating the Top’s daughter (Anna Paquin).
Some nice plot developments take us through to the end of the movie where the final inevitable stand-off between the two occur.
Phoenix’s performance as the anti-hero Elwood, is, in my opinion, the best of his career to date, I really got behind his character, despite his actions. This guy gets better in each movie and I really enjoy his work.
Can’t remember what rating this had here in the UK, but with the bad language, slight sexuality and drug references, it probably got a 15.
Verdict – Top notch – 8.5/10
