Encoding Hardware

Besides upgrading your proc, are there any cards you can buy to increse speed when encoding video to multiple formats? I do a lot of different conversions, and something universal would be best. I.E. converting Xvid's to DVD takes 4 hours with my 2.4Ghz.......I'm asking if there's any hardware that can speed this up.

No, processor power is the only way to go.

You can get capture cards that will do real-time MPEG encoding, and there are also some skanky DIVX cards around, but they are terrible quality.

You could use a faster encoder. I don't know what you use at the moment, but Cinema Craft is at leats twice as fast as TMPGenc, and around 2 million times faster than ProCoder.

what the hell are you on about?

google either Canopus DVStorm 2 or Matrox RT.X100 for good affordable realtime mpeg cards. but personally i wouldn't waste $1000 on a card just to do this when you could spend $80 on a dvd player or xbox that'll play divx....

Those are quite expensive cards, and the quality of their MPEG encoding still isn't as good as a good multi-pass software encode. I was referring to consumer cards like the Hauppauge range, which are not very good. That's what the hell I'm talking about.

It also sounded like the poster was more interested in encoding AVIs rather than capturing and encoding from his own source material.

I am with you on the DIVX compatible player, though, but some people like to share their DVDs with friends and family, so standard DVDs are usually preferable.

What the hell? Are you talking about one xivd, about the standard size of 700 megs to DVD (m2v, wav)?? 4 hours? What program do you use? That seems quite long, my 2.5 gig Athlon XP takes only 2 to 2 and 1/2 for two xvids, maybe 1 1/2 to 2 hours for one using Tmpgenc Plus. How much ram do you have? This system has 1 gig, and I would believe that can make a difference though if anyone knows for sure, let me know.

MainConcept is my main (s)vcd/mpeg1/mpeg2 speedy converter of choice, however, canopous procoder has an uncanny ability to convert very nasty xvid/divx files that seem to crash/error with most video converters and even windows explorer.
