DVD-R issue

One of my buddies has a massive collection of burned DVD movies and i want to duplicate them but when i put the DVD-R's in my DVD drive it doesnt read them at all, anyone know whats going on here, id really appreciate the help, thanks!

I have a external I/O magic, dual format/double layer 16x drive if that helps
