I'm totally confused about subs, help !

Hello

I have a xvid dvdrip movie and directory subs within,
so I extracted rar file there and I have two files now:

xxx.sub
xxx.idx

What can I do to watch that avi movie with that subtitles ?
I use Xbox console with XBMC ( http://www.xboxmediacenter.de )
to watch movies, everything works always perfect with this software when I use movie without subtitles or with subtitles in TXT format.
I can't get that *.sub and *.idx to work with that.
I've read the XBMC documentation and there is that this player supports SUB and VOBSUB files, so it should be alright, am I right ? So why it not all right ? ;-)

I also tried to open that files in some subtitle conversion tool, but all I've used give me errors - some hashes etc. - it looks like opening a binary file in notepad
To be sure I also tried to open that movie with those subtitles in a few PC players - no good result. There were not recognised at all or gave a strange error.

This time I got really angry so I thought that maybe I have a broken files with that subs so I downloaded different ones from another movie - the situation follows up.

HUH, wtf is that ?
Wgat for are those subs if i can not play them any normal way ?
So whats the problem ?

Hah, I'm after almost 2 hours on google and many tries to get that subtitle to work with my movie and no effect, can u help me ?
Any ideas ?

Thanx a lot, I'm tired....
And sorry for my language bugs, im not english

GREETZ
