Hey, I've never been able to find this out, so you are a god if you can help me. I have an .avi file that I simple want to trim the beginning and end. I have found the only way to do this is by programs which trim the movie, but then force you to use a video/audio compressor for the output.
Can't I just trim off a part of the video without going through all that? Thanks in advance.

Virtualdub. Under video and audio, use options "direct stream copy".

I use mencoder for this all the time. There are several ways to specify the start and end positions ... times, bytes, frame numbers, etc.

Example:

mencoder -ss 00:00:20 -endpos 730000000b file.avi -ovc copy -oac copy -o file.cut.avi

Not much encoding is necessary; it's mostly just copying and takes about 3 minutes for a 700MB file on my 867MHz laptop.

i suggest nandub, its what i use for splitting movies and trimming them all the time - i wish some sod hadn't told me ages ago (when i knew far less about this kinda stuff...) that 'you can only trim them if you re-encode the film'... BAH. sod

anyway, nandub is easy, just load the film, press 'home', hold shift, and 'right arrow' to fast forward to the keyframe (important to cut on a keyframe) you want to cut to, then press 'end', and 'delete'

now hold 'control' and 'right' to skip to the very END of the film, press 'end', then 'shift' and 'left arrow' to scan backwards through the film, to find the keyframe you want to cut too. press 'home' then 'delete'.

-then go video/direct stream copy

finally, file, save as, then save your trimmed file..

quite a few steps, but insanely easy when you actually do it.

i just got into the habit of using nandub for any post encoding work -ie adding sound, and then after that, splitting the file to 2 cds, so thats the only reason i suggested it
