At the moment I don't have an Mpeg4 DVD player and I am really looking into getting one this summer eventually. It's this or the phillips. I read reviews at videohelp, everyone seems to rate this higher. Anyone tried this out personally? The store sells this and the phillips for the same price.

Sarcasm?

And does Mpeg4 DVD player mean that XVIDs, DIVX, and other such files can be played, or is just XVIDS?

it plays divx/xvid, other mpeg4 stuff, some qpel, etc. its chipset is apparently better than the phillips one, the picture quality is supposed to be nicer, and odder formats are supported. and unfortunately i dont have $300 laying around to buy an xbox, get a chip, etc, etc.

Well I got the philips dvp642 and it's a great dvd player. it wont play qpel or gmc but most stuff around don't use it anyway.
It plays zillions of different kinds of cds and dvds no prob I've tried about 10 different cdr's and about 4 dcdr(w) with no problems. Its the best $60 i spent.

You don't need to outlay for a chip. Just get it soft modded. With these DVD players you never know whether the company will support it with firmware upgrades when there are new evolutions of xvid/divx. With an xbox and xbmc there are literally updates on a daily basis

A quick search online suggests you can easily get an xbox for under $150

Seriously. Its the only way to go. I bought an xvid dvd player and within a few months it was useless when groups started using Packed Bitstream. Never ONCE had a problem with my soft modded xbox.

That never worked for me. It was still jerky on playback. A marked improvement for sure but far from perfect.

Softmodding is when you modify the software as opposed to using a chip to modify the hardware

The DK Digital 339 will play pretty much any file you care to mention, only £35.

Also has lots of outputs if your going to connect it to a surround amp.

The stuff with packed bitstreams works fine after being unpacked.

Their tech support people are apparently also working on a fix for playing packed bitstream files.
