Question players...

not sure if this is a "legal" question, but i'm just curious as to what all you vcdquality kids use as media players on your computers? just curious.

Admin?

Personally I use VLC (from videolan.org) cos it's stupidly powerful, doesn't rely on external codecs and more importantly - runs from a folder and doesn't actually require "installing" which means I can put it and a movie onto a USB key and take it to work to watch

Pffff, codecs (including H264) and then some

Look at this... www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

Plus, it's open source and has shitloads of plugins. It even supports TV cards and network streaming (using VLC as the server). The only thing it lacks is streaming video support for formats such as Real and Quicktime but I guess that's a licensing issue. Fuck, it even supports "special effects" should you wish to distort the picture or make it sepia-toned or add any other of a multitude of effects. Did I mention the automatic de-interlacing doodad too? Makes a pretty good job of fixing releases that have been encoded by a cunt.

Yeah, I should've explained that VLC is multi-platform which is why it includes it's own codecs I guess... Because the codecs don't exist on all platforms anyway, so they had to write them, so you may as well include them in the Windows port.

Did I also mention that it's skinnable and also supports playing cue/bin files directly without the need to mount them? Oh, and there is NO DELAY during playlist entries either so the CD1/CD2 change is often impossible to notice.

What else? Erm... Mouse gestures

lmao2k is right, it's HEAVING with options, and that's before you click the "Advanced Options" checkbox which immediatley triples the complexity of every config screen It an awesome, if slightly complicated player, but easily the most powerful one out there.

AND IT'S FREE!!!

Not really on my computer but XBMC does a damn good job on the Xbox. Best Media Player I've ever used.

If it's a simple .avi I use WMP 10, just because I like the easy control mode in fullscreen when I have to go run and do something quickly.

But if the file is a .bin or something, I go with VLC.

But you could just use VLC period if you wanted...

Bitter, miserable twat.

Last time I used VLC the user interface was too "clunky" for my liking.

E.g.:
Want fullscreen in MPC? Press alt+enter. Want to pause? press space.
Want fullscreen in VLC? Right click, find the menu for view, click fullscreen, then drag the menu bar out of the way. Want to pause? Shit, where's the menu bar gone...

I also remember it used to crash on a fast user switch. And because it used its own decoders, you couldn't use additional directshow filters like ReClock.

Although that was a while ago, and things may have changed since then.

My critism for VLC is also that it didn't seem to play certain releases that well (Saosin). I'm hooked to MPlayer. Search the forum, there is a link to a nice, simple Windows version if you need.
