A troubled Laptop

I have a laptop, and coupple of weeks ago, it just wouldn't start to boot up.
The hard drive would come on, and shut off immediately after, and there is no visual activity on the screen.

Yesterday, I tried to turn the laptop on, and it booted up like normal. So i cleaned the hard drive, loaded windows xp, and it appears to be working fine.

My question is, I'm thinking about using this laptop, since it seems to be working, but I'm not positive.

You think you got an answer to what was wrong?

Specs:
Intel i855pm
Intel Centrino Mobile 1.5 ghz
512mb RAM (don't know what brand/kind)
ATI Radeon 9600 Mobile
and regular stuff after that.

Thanks

My laptop was troubled for awhile. It seems that it came from a broken home and really never got the attention that it needed. Eventually, it fell into the "wrong crowd" and starting sleeping with Powerbooks for crack money. It's been trying to clean up its act for awhile, but dammit it's hard to go straight in this economy. I just hope it doesn't start cutting itself again....I may have to give it up for adoption if it does.

PS - No visual activity would indicate a mobo problem, I assume. When mine acted up (for real) the drive didn't boot but the screen still came on and did the powerup check stuff. I had to wipe my drive and reinstall OS which worked fine. Turns out I scrambled the partition with static (apparently) when I was replacing a bad cooling fan. WHO KNEW you were supposed to take the HD out before performing delicate electrical work on a laptop?

Admin?

With it shutting itself off, I'm tipping it's either an overheating issue or the battery is fucked... Kinda impossible to tell though.

Thanks for your help.

I'm leaning towards motherboard or RAM

I know it's not video card, because i never do gaming on it anyways.
It's not hard drive, i checked on that.
It's not the battery.

Overheating, possible, but leaning away from it.

Again, thanks for your help.

From my experience if it's your RAM your screen will still come on but freeze up when it tries to do the RAM check. The no video at all thing could also (I still think Mobo) be something simple like a bad screen. Did it act like maybe it was booting but just without any video? I've seen screens go in and out of working toward the end of their life on some laptops. Compaq's are really bad about that sort of thing.

i took my pc apart and when i put it back together, neglected to put the ram back in so i can say with certainty that if you turn a pc on with no ram or fucked ram you get nothing on the screen at all.

No, I didn't get a beep, or anything.

The hard drive would sound like it's turning on, and would shut off immediately after.

It's just strange, because one day it just starts up like normal.

Thanks

Yeah, I thought so too Dwaggy. I'm not a professional though. But now that Dwaggy and I agree....there can be no doubt!

Other things Dwaggy and I agree on:

1. Shn sucks.
2. October is the best month to be born.
