Sounds like a Codec problem to me

More information please, what codecs/player are you using, what are the files DivX or XviD, what is the audio codec on the files etc etc

Make sure you uninstall any codec packs and only install those codecs you actually need.
Check your msconfig or Startup for programs that start automatically with every boot.
Disable quality enhancers in your decoder settings.
Could just be that your PC is a bit slow

check for the right codecs (as the above two said)
i recomed you use gspot to make sure you have the correct codecs installed

code:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

also, make sure you are not running very large programs while you are trying to view the avi file, even uploading has cause studdering in avi files i have tried to view

so in short
check codecs
try to run the minum amout of progs you can while viewing the avi
