The movie itself is miscast and badly edited. Certain visual gags such as the name on the Ford Prefect, the mice children and the Apple Corp logo on Deep Thought just don't work on the small screen.
At least I haven't wasted any money on a retail copy.

The color starts looking good on a proper TV (DLP or LCD). Definitely no problems there for me. But ya, CRTs usually have dull colors to begin with.
As for the movie, I am a huge fan for the books now for around 15 years and even played the old text adventure game also. But I can't stand all the bashing of the movie. The movie was different from the books/radio on purpose, which the idea of Adams was to write a script that was not like watching the exact same as the BBC radio series on a big screen. Not to mention, if it was like the books, there would be a large outburst of "I don't get this dry British humor". So it is a lose/lose situation anyway you do it.
But I agree, the casting of some characters was poor. I am not racist, by Mos Def as Prefect didn't work for me. The guy is described as a Scottish guy with ginger red haid in the books. Also, the lack of 2 heads on Zaphod at all times was disappointing. With the special effects in the movie, they could have sprung for a second head (and not the way they did it in the movie).
Alan Rickman for Marvin was perfect, Sam Rockwell for Zaphod was actually good, Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent was a good choice, Stephen Fry as the guide was good. Zooey Deschenal (sp?) was good enough for Trillian... Nothing to complain about there IMO. I guess I just took the movie for what it is, and I didn't expect the book at all (especially since Adams said he wanted to make a movie with completely different material, not to mention, his script was mostly used.)
