Getting Windows password

Ok, what is the easiest way to get a windows logon password?

I remember it being very easy for windows 95 and 98, just a case of getting the pwl file and decrypting it with Jack the Ripper.

Not too sure I fully understand how the passwords are stored now with them being in the registry.

So what would be the easiest way?

:: Its running Windows XP.

Thanks for your answers but I don't want to reset the password. Its a kind of covert office prank mission. I need to gain access without making it obvious, I have a time window of about 40 minutes every morning.

Need to either gain access without the person knowing, or just copying the emails from outlook to disk would be good enough.

You could try using an RDP to the machine, it would let you access the files, you would just need a level of admin ability on the network to log on with.

Assuming your on a network running something like AD or at least an Exchange box you could try adding yourself to the guys mail box. You would just have to get the administrative tools added to your PC, with the level of trickyness increasing the higher your network secuirty is set.

Final option would be to get a hardware key logger and pimp his keyboard, you would then have his password, along with a ton of other shit.

are there no files I could grab through dos , bring home and work on here?

I have his BIOS password so I can change the first boot device. It is a laptop and it is on a wireless network, however the security on this network is top banana and I don't want to get fired over something silly.

mod? no! asshole? yes!

you need to get a copy of the SAM and SECURITY files in the windows\system32\config folder. use either cain and abel or 10pht crack to rip them apart. depending on the version of XP it may have double encryption, in which case, the help files of either program will help you with cracking it...

Kind of stumbled at the first hurdle, he has password protected his bios so I can't change the boot first device.

It is possible that it is already set to floppy or CD (I only took my USB drive) will try again tomorrow.

I know certain Laptop bios password can be disabled by plugging in a particular serial port connection. The correct crossing of pins within the adaptor sends a signal to the laptop to do a complete factory reset. Maybe the PC in question has some similar backdoor
