Time for a New Desktop

Alright all you tech guru's out there, time to spew forth that knowledge.

I have had this old desktop of mine for almost 7 years. I just absolutely refused to buy another until it died. Well, it did.

Now that we have all this wonderful new stuff, Vista ( currently running Home premium and love it on my notebook..is Ultimate worth the $$? ), Core™2 Duo processors, and a few other things, I would like to have some opinions. Technically speaking of course.

I prefer Intel over AMD. Sorry, I know this will come as a shock and maybe upset some but my old Desktop was AMD and was worth it's weight in gold for the time it lasted, but I want Intel.
I will take suggestions about AMD seriously though.

I am not much of a gamer, I download shitloads, I burn "some" not a lot but "some," my display must be better than average, and I might buy a new monitor after reading Para's thread about them. Basically, this PC will never shut off as I will access it from work/wherever.

So, after that tidbit of information, do any of you fine people have any suggestions. Money isn't a huge issue but I am not spending $3,000 or 1,600 Pounds either (close enough to the ER).

Thoughts...

Cyberpower PC's are well built and they have one of the best configuration utilities (real time) on the webs. Reasonable pricing for the machines as well. I have seen several of their machines, and they are impressive, some of the cases are bunk, but the one I picked in this sample is smooth..

It's love baby!

Definitely stick with a core 2 duo, what ever is in your budget.

At least 2 gigs of ram if your running Vista, but you can get away with 1 gig if need (you will see an improvement though, much more than on XP).

You don't need to go all out for Direct10 card since you really don't do any gaming (what's wrong with you?!?! ) so any decent mid priced card should do you well.

Nice system that Elje posted, but if you can build it yourself, you probably could do better price-wise. If not, follow his system specs and see if anything comes close to matching what you want.

Side note: If you do a lot of dvd burning like I do, you'll really like a lightscribe drive. No more messy sharpies or printed labels, though the lightscribe can take 15-30 minutes depending on the detail of the label your 'Scribing".

Thanks a bunch guys. I hate waiting, SO, when I want something I go get it.
Here is what I got today.

CPU: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6400 CPU @ 2.13GHz, Shared 2x2MB L2 Cache 1066 MHz FSB
2048 MB DDR2 Memory
nVIDIA® GeForce™ 7300 LE Up To 256 MB Shared Video Memory
Ports 2 FireWire™ (IEEE 1394), 8 USB
Audio 8 Channel (7.1) High Definition
56K fax (blah... Blah)
Microsoft Windows Vista™ Ultimate
Hard Drive 400 GB SATA II 7200 RPM with 8 MB Cache
Optical Drive Double-layer 16x Multi-format DVD(plus minus)RW
Network 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN
TV Tuner and a whole shit load of accessories that I will probably never use.

ELJ, Many thanks for the heads up on the specs. I would have bought what you posted but I did not want to build it ( time constrainsts forbid me from doing so as well ). If I could have got that exact PC tonight I would have, but I have no patience so I went ahead and got this.

Runs smooth

Seriously,
Many Thanks.

Admin?

Amiga A500 (Motorola 68000 CPU)
512Kb of ram with an extra 512Kb ram pack
External 20Mb SCSI drive
Kickstart 1.3 and Workbench
External 3.5" floppy drive
Quickshot Pro joystick

I'd also recommend DirectoryOpus for your file handling.

don't get the A600 it doesn't have the numeric keypad. Also, the A1200 is more powerful but isn't backwardly compatible with some games, especially those that monkey around with the stack (the processor cache tends to fuckup)
