my mate has just rang me and said when he presses certain letters on his keyboard numbers appear on his monitor ie: k=2 i=2 anyone have any idea what this could be it is a dell laptop he got it in january and has already had a new motherboard and harddrive it was fine yesterday

Might be stating the bleeding obvious but has he tried turning numlock off? Although the numbers don't tie up with the keys you've mentioned, those keys on a laptop do sit where the number pad is once you enable numlock.

Yup, numlocks deffo on. u=4 i=5 o=6 k=2 etc.
