Don't worry, I know all the games suck so I need to make use of the media player aspects of it. Now I know it makes a pretty darned good BD player after I buy a HDMI cable and a remote (which is hilarious given the amount of sony fanboys who keep attempting to mock xbox owners who have to pay for extra wireless or HDDVD which is a luxury and not a requirement.. UNLIKE THE FUCKING HIDEF CABLE YOU RETARDS)

Anyway.

I read a FAQ that indicated that it can play back a pretty large amount of codecs natively rather than via realtime reencoding (x360) or not at all (xbmc) so I'm intrigued what it can do and via what systems. With my x360 I've mainly been using the Iguana or similar scene releases that are in VC1 wmv's without a prob, and they look pretty tidy, but it can't do h.264 (despite that sodding spring update) nor MPEG2 .TS files. It looks like the sony can, but it just gets a bit arsey... so what can it or can't it do?

This is the list I've seen in a FAQ:

MPEG-1
MPEG-2 (PS, TS)
MPEG-4 SP
MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.

which isn't a bad list, especially if it'll do raw 1080i .TS, I just need to dig out some old HD discs I made, but obviously TV rips in h.264 are the main thing I'd want as more of these are done than WMV VC1 (unless teams do both this season)

Bah, you bought one? I was seriously contemplating buying one purely for the Blu-Ray and the fact that the 360 is so unreliable. If mine lasts another 12 months it would be a miricle.

Yeah hence I kept my eye out for a price I thought was better. I could get one from my mates work second hand on his discount for £250 which isn't bad, but I found a new sealed one (I unwrapped it myself) for £290 so I bought that.

Ah the 250 one is via my flatmates work and would only ever be able to get one, i thought the £40 extra for a sealed one would be worth the difference (and they didn't have any in stock the other day anyway)

Aye... £40 more would be worth it I guess, depends on the condition of the 2nd had one. I'll only ever use it for a media unit, and possibly some of the games that utilise the blu ray unit to stuff a little bit more onto (which i hear they are going to do on GTA IV)

Hmm. Maybe i'll see if i can grab one on the cheap on ebay.
