My parents computer (that I am currently on) always freezes up and I have no idea why. Sometimes it will stay on at length but then other times it freezes up after 5-10 minutes. And it freezes most when we do a virus scan (using Norton). It's a real pain, and we took it to get fixed but it keeps doing the same thing. I know that I didn't give many details and am being very vague but..any idea as to why it might be doing this? Thank you in advance.

Edit: And on occasion it says this, and just said this the last time that I started the computer up: "Checking file system on E:

The type of the file system is FAT32.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel...etc.

Your best bet to prevent freezing is to remove all of the heatsinks.

Erm, don't remove the Heatsinks


It's hard to trace a lockup if the fucker is totally freezing but I'd recommend:

1) Remove Norton, think of it as something akin to brutally fucking your PC whilst using Vicks Vapor Rub as lube.

2) Remove any non-essential USB devices.

3) Next time it crashes, reboot and go START > RUN > eventvwr

(and check the event log to see if Windows manages to dump some error info in there before it went tits-up)

4) Grab Sisoft Sandra and do the burn-in tests to try and break the fucker... Make a note of when it breaks.

Also, what HAS been done to fix it? Has Windows been reinstalled for example or any hardware swapped out? If you find it's rock-solid with the USB stuff removed, slowly (I mean s-l-o-w-l-y) reintroduce them one at a time until it acts like a cunt again.

does it give you an error when it crashes or does it just freeze in general?

edit:: i think by "OS Repair" he means to have you run "sfc /scannow" from the run prompt. this will examine your system files to see if any are missing, corrupt of invalid. either that or he's talking about the repair option in the xp setup utility. if you try the setup repair and it still freezes, see if you can boot to safe mode and run the scannow command.

Do all of what NS suggested.

Also, as a side project, go to disk management in the admin tools and convert your hdd(s) to NTFS.

Back to your freezing issue. If it still locks up, you may well have a dodgy hardware component or your os may have got corrupted.

Try running an OS repair, see if that resolves the issue. If it doesn't then try replacing parts one by one to diagnose the problem. Possible causes could be the RAM, the CPU or the motherboard. If you have the parts to hand, it'll obviously cost you way less to find out!

Sandra could help pinpoint the hardware issue in this instance though.

you could also download seatools and long test your hd from boot. easy enough to check if there is a problem with your disk. Also try changing you graphics card if you have a spare.
