Ctrl_Alt_Delete.

When I open the Task Manager what are the only 'processes' that are to be running? I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2 if it matters. Thank you.

Depends what applications and services you have installed and running. That's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question.

For example, if you have Alcohol 120% installed on your machine, you may see a process called "StarWindService.exe" running (even though the application itself isn't running).

mod? no! asshole? yes!

On a fresh install of XP Pro, again depending on the vendor, you should see between 27 and 35 processes running. if you have 50 - 60 running, you should start pulling back.

First check your msconfig (start menu - run - msconfig) and a good portion of your processes will match what's in there, and give you a directory location. if you don't know what the process ccapp is, you can see from your msconfig that its norton related, and so on....

anything that doesn't have a listing in msconfig, or looks like randomly strungs together characters, try google. generally the first 5 or so results will be pages that tell you what each process is.
