Volume icon in system tray & sound

Ok... here are my issues.

Running XP sp2 on work lappy...

1. The icon for volume control in the system tray has disappeared. Via the control panel, I cannot get it to reappear.
2. Also having issues with getting sound from the laptop, I see no hardware conflicts in the device manager. As far as I can tell, all looks well (drivers, default playback devices, volume, etc).

I was fishing that the problem might be resolved by messing with the settings under gpedit.msc, just in case corporate is deciding to have some fun with policy.
