Pendulum - In Silico

1. "Showdown" – 5:27
2. "Different" – 5:51
3. "Propane Nightmares" – 5:13
4. "Visions" – 5:36
5. "Midnight Runner" – 6:55
6. "The Other Side" – 5:15
7. "Mutiny" – 5:09
8. "9000 Miles" – 6:26
9. "Granite" – 4:41
10. "The Tempest" – 7:27

Being a huge fan of Drum and Bass in general and a fan of Pendulum's previous album, I was suprised when this was released (although the official street date is 12/05) as I had no idea it was due out. Having said that, I'm fucking glad it was

Although I'd be the first to say that it's not really an issue with the dance music genre; many bands struggle with their second albums, often struggling to find inspiration and lacking direction. Pendulum appeared to have sidestepped part of this issue by trying (or inventing) a new genre instead... Pendulum would like to present "Rock n Bass" or "Drum n Rock" or something (ok, I made that up) but they've basically stuck to their DnB roots while taking influence from a lot of modern rock bands, in particular Muse.

For those of you who have already heard track 3 from the album, Propane Nightmares, you'll be pleased to know the rest of the album is just as enjoyable and well worth a listen.

Certainly worth a download to check it out, I might invest in the CD of this as I am playing my downloaded (nay, PIRATED!) copy to death and Pendulum deserve the recognition for a job well done. A healthy mash-up of two genres that shouldn't really work but do. It might not be everybodies cup of tea but so long as you realise that anybody that doesn't enjoy at least one or two tracks from this album probably gargles tramp piss for entertainment, the world will keep turning.

I want to see these guys live

Score 8/10 - Excellent album

well i havent heard the album as of yet, but pendulum are my favourite dnb group.
i can probably guess myself that in silico is not what im looking for.
itll probably still be a good album, but it has to be inferior to hold your colour, that album was just soo good, it got me into drum and bass.

will update later with a review

well ive just gave the album a listen. and the general outlook was good. a few stand out songs like showdown, midnight runner and the tempest were the high points of the album. i can see the general vision they ( their producer) were going in, but it just didnt do it for me. granted the guitar riffs were excellent, but they dont compare to the demonic buzzing basslines in songs like through the loop and another planet from hold your colour.the lyrics in the album didnt really work for the most part. id definately give it another listen, but if i had to choose between it and hold your colour id have to chose hold your colour.

i give it 7/10.
in silico was good, but could have been soo much better if they had have leaned more towards their drum and bass side affairs.the album reminded me of distress signal, but not in a good way

It took me a couple of listens to get used to the big changes in style/tempo that occur within each song let alone throughout the album. I've since whacked it on CD and stuck it in my car for some really loud, kidney-punching (thanks to the half decent speakers I have) listens and I'm really enjoying it now. You can definitely hear the Muse influence in some parts (particularly Propane Nightmare from 00:00 - 01:05) which is not a bad thing as I enjoy Muse.

I'd give it an 8/10 overall.

not a fan of the album at all, but i can understand the appeal i suppose.

i used to love pendulum around the time of 'trail of sevens', 'toxic shock', 'still grey' and more from that era but hold your colour took me by surprise somewhat... although i enjoyed some of the album, tracks like tarantula and slam showed a departure from their sound and indicated that they were going to try very hard to appeal to a much wider audience in the future...

then they got signed to warner and in came "in silico". the whole concept of rock&bass makes me cringe tbh, im sure it could be done well but to me this album just sounds like horrible cheesy pop music @ 170bpm. most of the lyrics are seriously cringeworthy and some of those mid-to-high melody synths just grate on my ears. ive watched the average age of pendulum fans drop from 18+ to 12-18 with this album.

and tbh their attitude to the backlash from fans has been nothing short of completely childish.

quote:
Rob Swire of Pendulum fame wrote:

oh, and by the way - i'm not sure if drum and bass is dead or dying (i've been in the studio / on tour too long to tell) - however, if your genre was flimsy enough to be knocked over by ONE SINGLE RECORDING ARTIST who happened to - god forbid - sell some fucking records for the first time in about 5/6 years, then i'm glad it was us that got to drive the final stake through its stale pig shit heart - and good riddance. wake me up when your genre is making something that people outside the scene think is worth listening to again.

source

there is also a quote somewhere from him claiming that he used lots of high pitched synths on in silico almost solely because he knew it would piss off their old fans. dick.

but anyway, im bound to get annoyed by it. im a dnb loving meathead. ive almost a thousand dnb vinyl, upwards of 300GB of singles/ep's archived by record label and catalogue number on my pc and part of my love for the music is its underground nature. fair play to pendulum for suceeding, its just a shame they had to sell the fuck out to do so.

I'm a huge fan of dnb (have been since the Jungle scene in the early 90s) but it isn't mainstream and to be honest, i agree with that quote from Rob Swire... Good luck to em, they were on the periphery of the music industry until recently and the new stuff has a more commercial appeal. Have they sold out? Possibly. Would I sell out under the same circumstances? You betcha

pjeer?

I liked the old stuff, initially really liked the last record then found it became extremely irritating to the point I can't listen to any of it, and haven't really given the new record a shot.

But 'selling out' happens, I'd rather the guy go on and make music he's happy making and making a buck out of it than disappearing into obscurity and not being able to support himself. Plenty of bands stayed real and kept pumping out boring album after album.. is that really any worse than signing to a major and turning what was most likely a hobby into a career. If it directly negates what you're supposed to be about then it's an issue, but for anyone involved in electronic music it's not such a big deal. Besides, guy's playing Llandudno.. nobody wants to play Llandudno whether famous or not!

Also, better it happens to someone who has a legit past than the majors scooping up someone with the right look and making them big. I tend to not give too much of a fuck about bands I like 'selling out' to be honest, and that's including hearing the new Offspring single
