I'm going to fix an old PC and need a new motherboard.
What is easiest way to find out which one is correct for the CPU and RAM?
I've been googling but don't see any easy answers.

What CPU and Ram do you have?

Depending on type of CPU you can determine the required socket (on motherboard) and then see what particular motherboards that take that cpu will take your ram. Keep in mind though with the prices of CPU and ram (DDR2) so low it might be a better option to just replace all 3.

It's a Athlon 3000xp.
CPU-Z says Package: Socket A (462)
Memory DDR

So would i just look for a MB that supports socket A and takes DDR?

I don't want to spend too much on it cause i'm giving it to my son who is an ungrateful bastard.

my firm recommendation is not to replace those parts. they are already obsolete by several generations and spending money on them (if you can find the parts) will end up costing you the same amount in the long run.

Only real option is if you can find a used mobo for very little money. As Bakkoda stated (and myself in my first reply) the money you may ended up spending on an old 462 socket mobo might be as much as you could spend on a decent albeit cheap cpu/mobo/ram combo. Look around and compare prices.
