Laptop sleep mode?

Is there any way that I can put my laptop into sleep mode (fan stops) but the wireless internet is still active (i can recieve PMs etc?)

The wireless card should have a power state that can be set.

But i don't know about the PM's thing as the page would have to refresh?

ahh kool by pm i meant instant messages on msn etc...

any idea where about in control panel i can set wifi to stay on whilst in sleep mode?
btw should this be ok? i mean it shouldnt heat up right?...i suppose it shouldnt..wifi routers dont have fans..
