Laptop dvd rw drives

Does anyone know if optical drives are interchangeable in laptops like they are desktop machines? The DVD RW drive on my windows laptop is fecked and I want to know if I have to replace it with the exact same model or whether pretty much any standard one would do.

Ta.

They are mostly interchangeable. The connector is the same on pretty much all of them (with the exception of the brand new ones, some of which are different). Be ware that not all bezels interchange from drive to drive. Dell used two different styles in particular, for example.

Thanks, I was wondering if that was the case. The bezel on my Acer laptop looks like it was designed especially for that machine. I will have to do some investigating into whether a different bezel would fit on the machine if I can't make the current bezel fit.

Thanks

Provided you're very careful removing it you should find you can attach it to the new drive with little difficulty, generally the internals are the same layout.
