I set up a wireless network at a friends house with 2 laptops. Only real use is for internet (no file sharing, printer, media etc.) One is running xp and everything works fine. The other one is running vista and everytime he restarts or the comp goes to sleep (basically loses its IP) vista for some reason connects with limited or local access only. It takes 2 or 3 times of using the network and sharing center tool to get a new IP for the system to regain internet connectivity.

Only real settings I put in was wpa2 security and stopped the ssid from broadcasting. It is setup up to connect automatically when network is in range even if the ssid is not broadcasting.

Anyone got any answers on what I can do so the vista system will restart and grab an internet ready IP automatically??

Do you have comps using the wired ports? Ill assume you are using DHCP and with some routers mixing DHCP and wired/wireless things can get a bit fucked. Leases dont expire, IPs dont renew, etc etc. This is especially true of pre-Cisco Linksys routers (although I have heard of problems post-Cisco buyout as well).

My first word of advice when setting up a home network is Static IPs. It just makes things easier. This way you can even edit the machines host files to point to one another using machine names.

As far as this being a Vista problem, I couldnt tell ya one way or another. Last MS operating system I used was XP and a bit of Win 7 here and there.

appreciate the tips Bakkoda, i tried setting a static ip and that seemed to work. will keep an eye on it.
