The shooting style of Homicide meets a comic tone
less sentimental than Ally McBeal to create a Car
54 where are you? for the nineties, in BEAT COPS.
BEAT COPS tells the story of two best friends, Stan
and Hank, who had been happily riding low level
desk jobs for their entire tenure as New York City
Police officers. Then one day, as part of the NYC
police visibility program, they are “promoted” to
Beat Cops.
Walking the beat is quite a shock to Stan and
Hank as they had spent seven years comfortably
hiding behind the chain link door of the evidence
storage room. There, they had virtually no contact
with their supervisors or the public. Blissfully,
their time was spent playing cards, watching
television and engaging in meaningless but
entertaining conversation. Now, Stan and hank,
two less than bright-eyed “rookies”, are
learning for the first time what it means to be
a cop on the streets of New York City. Their
new job consists of directing traffic, keeping
bike messengers off the sidewalk, and chasing
old ladies who ignore the “pooper scooper” laws.
Their days are spent walking and talking through
the streets of New York City while trying to
avoid the public and shirk their responsibilities.
BEAT COPS is not your typical cop show.
Imagine a Jerry Seinfeld and George Costanza
dynamic set literally on the streets of New York.
Episode stories are focused on Stan and Hank’s
lives as two single, unambitious, somewhat
irresponsible, regular guys. While most cops
bring their work home with them, Stan and Hank
bring their home lives to work. But the
responsibilities of the job, their fellow
officers, and the constant demands of the
public keep distracting them from their
personal agendas (going to the beach, gabbing,
arguing, playing video games, chasing cute
meter maids, etc.)
Both single and living around the corner from
each other, Stan and Hank are partners and best
friends who have a relationship that at sometimes
is like that of brothers and at other times like
a squabbling married couple. They can at once
fight about something that happened when they
were each ten years old and defend each other
from any outside threat.
While Stan and hank’s dispositions are somewhat
familiar, their differences are obvious often as
a matter of degree. Hank is lazy, cynical and
unabashedly irresponsible. Stan is a bit more
ambitious, optimistic, a tad anal and
conscientious - almost nerdy. Hank tends to be
defensive about his physical stature. He was, in
fact, standing on his toes while being measured
for his police force qualifying physical and
fears being exposed. Stan, on the other hand,
is a fanatical history buff, which is often a
source of mocking from other officers. He is an
avid fan of fantasy board games, and belongs to
a group who stage reenactments of sword fights
from the middle ages.
Enjoy!
