³ ³ The Magdalene convents in Ireland were run by the Sisters of ³ ³
³ ³ Mercy on behalf of the Catholic Church. They housed young ³ ³
³ ³ people sent there by families or orphanages, who were ³ ³
³ ³ imprisoned and forced to work to atone for their sins these ³ ³
³ ³ ranged from being a single mother, to being too pretty or too ³ ³
³ ³ ugly, too stupid or too intelligent, or the victim of a rape ³ ³
³ ³ made public knowledge. The term to be served was life: ³ ³
³ ³ thousands of women lived and died within the convent walls. ³ ³
³ ³ The last Magdalene convent in Ireland closed down as recently ³ ³
³ ³ as 1996. This film is based on the viewpoint of four of these ³ ³
³ ³ young women in the 1960s, a time wrongly considered by some to ³ ³
³ ³ be a time of uncontested freedom for women. It is a fictional ³ ³
