Shortly after accepting, she is attacked in her car just outside Kanin's apartment building. By the time he can reach the car to help her, all he finds is the severed hand of her unseen attacker. Ruby has disappeared. Six months later, Kanin's search takes him to Ruby's hometown of Wolf Lake. There he encounters Sheriff Matthew Donner (Tim Matheson) and his 16-year-old daughter Sophia (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), one of the few townspeople half-willing to help Kanin in his search. Sophia has begun to attract the attentions of fellow student Luke Cates (Paul Wasilewski), son of the town's most powerful and respected businessmen, Willard Cates (Bruce McGill), and his wife Vivian (Sharon Lawrence). We soon learn of Vivian Cates' involvement with druglord and real estate developer Tyler Creed (Scott Bairstow) who poses a threat to her husband's own supremacy among the local population. Another potential ally for Kanin is Sherman Blackstone (Graham Greene), the high school biology teacher, who seems to know much more than he is willing to share yet with Kanin. Kanin's attempts to find any traces of Ruby in the town seem to be failing and no one in the town will admit to ever having seen or known her. He finally takes matters into his own hands by breaking into the local high school, where he finds a photo of Ruby in a trophy case. He takes the photo and confronts the uncooperative townspeople in the midst of a church service. Willard Cates stands and admits that Ruby is his daughter. Kanin realizes that there is much more to this small idyllic town than meets the eye and that discovering the truth will not be easy. After discovering Luke Cates in a car with a girl who appears to be half-transformed into a wolf, Kanin is attacked and left unconscious in the woods. After being chased by an unseen force, his leg is caught in a trap. He suddenly spots the beautiful white wolf which he had previously seen staring at him from the lake shore. Vivian Cates had told him earlier that the sighting of the white wolf means that someone is watching over him. Moments later the wolf is shot with a tranquilizer gun and carried away by Willard Cates, who very softly whispers "forgive me" to the wolf. The show ends with Sherman Blackstone in his classroom showing slides of wolves and questioning his students about what's the most important thing to the wolf. "That's right, my little brothers and sisters," he says. "Survival of the pack."
