While many people think of penguins as comical birds who look like they've
been decked out in tuxedos, the truth is they're among the strongest and most
resilient creatures in the animal kingdom. And they have to be -- each year,
the emperor penguins of Antarctica travel through the most punishing
environment on Earth to their nesting grounds, and after the females lay their
eggs, the males keep them warm while their mates walk 70 miles back to the
sea to fatten themselves with fish for themselves and their young. Filmmaker
Luc Jacquet spent over a year braving the frigid temperatures of the South
Pole to film this annual ritual of the penguins, and March of the Penguins
documents their brave struggle to survive, as well as the close emotional
bonds between the penguin families. March of the Penguins was first screened
in France as La Marche de l'Empereur, with a handful of French actors
providing a voice-over in which they expressed the "thoughts" of the
penguins; for the American edition, Morgan Freeman was brought in to deliver
a more straightforward narration.

Removed the warnings, the Spanish Audio dub, the trailers, and one of the
documentary extras, a 23 minute National Geographic "Crittercam" docu. Kept
was the untouched movie, the 53 minute Making Of docu called "Of Penguins
And Men", (7-pass@1900) which details the incredible difficulties in making
the film, and a very good 7 minute Bugs Bunny cartoon with a penguin
(6-pass@2200).
US R1 NOTES: This was released earlier as March.Of.The.Penguins.R1.DVDR-BURGER.
Unfortunately, the Burger release used the inferior Canadian R1 version as
their source. Ordinarily the DVD releases for the 2 countries are very similar,
if not identical. That wasn't true here. Their DVD is 29.97fps interlaced
which they reencoded and didn't bother to IVTC. The US R1 is 23.976fps
progressively encoded and we were able to leave it untouched. There's a sample
of the Burger release in the sample folder along with the Emerald sample. The
Canadian R1 DVD included only the "Of Penguins And Men" extra which wasn't
included in the Burger release. We've got that and the Bugs Bunny cartoon.
The Canadian R1 DVD included only French subs, while the US R1 DVD includes
English, French, and Spanish subs. The DVDBeaver review below is for the
Canadian R1 DVD release.
