Just outside Orpington in Kent is the 600-year-old castle and estate of
Lullingstone, belonging to Guy and Sarah Hart Dyke, the 19th generation
of the family to live there. But times are hard and, despite opening the
house to the public, Guy needs a lot more money to pay for its upkeep.
However, this is not yet another film about upper-class characters watching
their country mansions rot about their ears. During the nine months that
Guy's botanist son Tom was being held by Colombian guerrillas (that's
another story), he came up with the idea of attracting visitors to
Lullingstone by building a "world garden" in its weed-filled herb garden.
"It's a wonderful, wonderful struggle," says Guy. He's actually referring
to keeping the house going, but he could just as well be talking about
building this new tourist attraction, too.
