Live-Action Shorts:
"West Bank Story"
The 2006 Oscar winner is an immensely clever
and good-natured spoof of West Side Story,
with the Jewish and Palestinian owners
of rival falafel stands locked in a bitter, musical
comedy feud for customers. The battle only intensifies
when Fatima, the beautiful Palestinian sister of
the Hummus Hut owner, falls in love with David, a
Jewish soldier whose family owns the Kosher King
("the chosen restaurant"), when their eyes meet at
a security checkpoint.
"The Saviour"
The stylistic antithesis of "West Bank Story,"
this understated and dryly funny Australian film
portrays the spiritual dilemma confronting Malcolm,
an earnest Mormon missionary, who's taken his
ministry off the streets and into the bedroom of
Carmel, a married suburban woman.
"One Too Many"
A sweet, low-key charmer from Spain, "One Too Many"
finds a middle-aged man in domestic crisis when
his wife leaves him in an angry huff. Barely able to
feed and clothe themselves, the man and his spoiled,
lazy teenaged son turn to his wife's elderly,
supposedly enfeebled mother for help?but as it
turns out, she's got her own agenda.
"Binta & The Great Idea"
Sponsored by UNICEF, this beautifully photographed
short is an admirable but a tad too leisurely paced
slice of life drama narrated by Binta, a bright
seven-year-old Senegalese villager, who dreams of
helping her older cousin get an education.
"Helmer & Son"
A harried, middle-aged man tries to coax
his elderly father out of his armoire in this
merely so-so Danish entry, peopled with stock figures
in familiar situations.
Animated Shorts:
"The Danish Poet"
Brimming with wit and wisdom, the 2006 Oscar winner
is a lilting, bittersweet and sophisticated modern
day fairy tale, narrated by Liv Ullmann, about
the title character's star-crossed romance with a
farmer's daughter he meets while en route to Nobel
Prize winning writer Sigrid Unset, author of
Kristin Lavransdatter.
"Maestro"
Five minutes before his performance, the title
character busily prepares to go on with the
show in this amusing Hungarian film.
The DVD only includes two of the five nominees
for Best Live-Action Short. Missing are "Lifted,"
"The Little Match Girl," and "No Time for Nuts."
Happily, animation fans can get their fill with
five of the DVD's six bonus shorts (the sole
live-action film, "Surviving the Rush" is more game
than inspired). Plympton's "Guide Dog" is the
standout, but the others are all worth a look,
especially Adam Parrish King's haunting and sorrowful
"The Wraith of Cobble Hill."
